Amish quilts on display at Ohio Dairy Barn Arts Center
ATHENS, Ohio — Amish quilts will be displayed as part of a special exhibit at the Dairy Barn Arts Center through Sept. 6. Quilting Traditions: The Art of the Amish is an exhibit of traditional Amish quilts from the private collection of Tom and Marsha French.

Curated by Molly Butler and Dee Dadik, the mission of the exhibit is to provide insight into utilitarian Amish quilts as art objects.
The quilts in the exhibit are from Pennsylvania, Oho and Indiana. Many of the elements show a regional similarity. Pennsylvania quilts made use of large pieces, bold saturated colors and elaborate quilting, while Ohio quilts show a preference for a pieced block with smaller pieces. Black was often used as a background color. Indiana quilts use more white and light green in a block format with small pieces.

The quilts in the exhibit date before 1950. Quilts made after 1950 were often made for sale to the public, and commercial choices then influenced the quilt’s design.
