What classes are taught to FFA members? There are many opportunities for learning endorsed by this chapter inside the classroom, laboratory and in the workforce. In the classroom, courses such as Ag. Mechanics, Advanced Ag. Mechanics, Advanced Life Science: Animals, Horticulture Science, Landscape Management, Plant & Soil Science, Summer Supervised Agriculture Experience and Animal Science are offered.  Each course caters to the students’ particular interest in the agriculture industry.

What contests does the chapter participate in? FFA members also participate in a variety of contests and Career Development Events (CDEs)  such as the upcoming Animal Science Skill-A-Thon, Crops Judging, Dairy Foods Evaluation, Meats Evaluation, Welding, Livestock Judging, and others.

Highest award given to the chapter: State Gold Emblem
Does the chapter have an Ag plot? If so, amount of acres and crops produced?
No
If not an Ag plot, is there some type of ag or business enterprise the chapter runs?
New to the chapter this year is a test plot for different varieties of corn in conjunction with Great Lakes Hybrids and local farmers and farm businesses.

What is your biggest fundraiser?
The largest fundraiser conducted by our chapter is the annual fruit and snack stick sale. The income generated by these sales are then used for chapter activities such as attending National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, but some of it is also given back to the community in the form of community service.

What is your chapter’s strength?
This chapter has found that its strength comes from the fellowship that is built from laboring together and understanding one another’s differences and similarities. The reason for this strength is that this chapter not only draws from one school system, but from four, Oregon-Davis, Knox, La Porte, and South Central. Knox, La Porte, and South Central are without FFA chapters therefore the students wishing to participate must travel to Oregon-Davis to be in the club. These students all come to the FFA with different backgrounds and experiences in agriculture, but all of them come with the same motives; to learn and to work making this chapter strong for its size.

Most unique fact about your chapter:
Until recently we have kept our ag teachers for a long period of time. Mr. Hammers and Mr. Duncan were the longest serving teachers we had. Mr. Hammers served for almost 40 years and Mr. Duncan taught for 32 years and retired three years ago.

Favorite community service project:
Last year the chapter landscaped the front entrance of the school, conducted a food drive, and held a farm animal petting zoo for elementary students for community service projects.

What else would you like to tell us?
The Oregon-Davis FFA would also like to thank Mike Hayes, Matt Johnson, Farm Fertilizers, Starke County Co-op, and any other community members and businesses that have helped and been a part of the students’ learning. We appreciate it more than you know.
