Tractor drive to bring country to the city during Indiana State Fair
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Driving a tractor through downtown Indianapolis may be a little unusual, but that is exactly what is planned for the 150th anniversary of the Indiana State Fair this year.

Set for Farmer’s Day, Wednesday, August 16, the Indiana State Fair plans to “bring the country to the city” with a tractor drive from Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis to the Fairgrounds in the capitol city.

Hoping to get one tractor from each of Indiana’s 92 counties, the State Fair invites anyone 18 years of age or older to submit an application to participate in the drive. Applications can be downloaded from the State Fair’s website at www.in.gov/statefair/fair/events and must be postmarked by July 21, 2006.

“We think this one-time event will be a highlight of the 150th Indiana State Fair,” says Maury Williamson, who has managed the Pioneer Village exhibit at the Fair for many years and is the spokesman for the tractor drive. “If nothing else, we will certainly catch the attention of folks in Indianapolis and maybe encourage them to attend this year’s Fair.”

Indiana’s Governor Mitch Daniels will help start the tractor drive, and Lt. Governor Becky Skillman plans to drive one of the tractors. In order to keep traffic congestion to a minimum only one tractor from each of Indiana’s 92 counties will be accepted to participate. The tractor drive is sponsored by the Indiana Soybean Board, Reynolds Farm Equipment and the Indiana State Fair.
