Butler County lamb group will sponsor lamb camp and show
By CELESTE BAUMGARTNER
Ohio Correspondent

HAMILTON, Ohio — To help Butler County and other youths prepare for the show season, the Butler County Lamb and Wool Assoc. (LWA) will be sponsoring the Winner’s Edge Lamb Camp May 6, followed by the Jackpot Show on June 16. Both will be at the Butler County Fairgrounds.

“The Lamb and Wool Association’s primary goal is to bring more interest to the lamb industry, starting with the youths,” said Cindy Meyer, Ohio State University extension agricultural agent, Butler County. “It is an opportunity for youths that have had lambs before, as well as youths that have not.

“The reason for doing the lamb camp and the show this year was to give the new people an opportunity to learn about lambs, to learn about how to show lambs and then give them an actual opportunity to show that specie before the fair.”

The featured expert at the lamb camp will be the nationally renowned livestock evaluator Tracy Dendinger of Washington Court House, Ohio, said Ruth Ann Young, secretary with the LWA. Dendinger is a sheep breeder, national judge and showperson who conducts clinics all over the country.

This lamb camp, which will run 9 a.m.-5 pm, will cover all aspects of exhibiting breeding sheep and club lambs, including ethics, health, exercise, training, selection, nutrition and more, Young said. The participants will bring their animals to the clinic for hands-on learning.

The registration fee is $50 for residents of Butler County and $80 for non-residents.

The weigh-in for the Jackpot Show for club lambs and breeding sheep will be from 9-11 a.m. the day of the show. The lambs will not be at fair weight. The show will begin at 11 a.m., with Cassie Mumaw judging. Jackpot rules will follow the Ohio Club Lamb Assoc. circuit.

Both events will be at the Butler County Fairgrounds Livestock Sale Barn, 1715 Fairgrove Ave. in Hamilton. Pre-registration is requested for the lamb camp although registrations will be accepted on the day of the event.
