1957: Nonstop rains keeping corn from fields
55 years ago
A new egg production setup is being used on the Frank Scheffler farm south of Shelbyville. The 1,640 hens are kept in wire cages, suspended about 2.5 feet above the floor. After an egg is laid, it rolls out of the cage into a trough. This cage-laying operation has been widely employed in Southern states, but has not been used much in Indiana.

A hen on the Alfred Wiseman farm southwest of Centerville laid an egg measuring 8 inches around the center and 9.25 inches in length. It weighted six ounces; nearly three times that of a normal egg. When broken it was found to contain a normal egg complete with shell, in addition to a yolk and whites.

Only 45 percent of the corn has been planted in Indiana because of the continuous rains that have hit the state. When conditions do allow for fieldwork, tractors are operated day and night as farmers try to catch up.
