50 years ago: Dunreith Packing Co. buildings destroyed by fire
1964


In a field of 100 Poland China barrows in the breed competition at the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn., a barrow owned by Robert and Gary Wilson of Markleville, Ind., was named breed champion.
The barrow was a lightweight and weighed in the 190-210 pounds range.
The Dunreith Packing Co. buildings housing the pickers, owned and operated by Orval Butterfield, was destroyed by fire. Children of the pickers living in the frame buildings were rescued without injury, but many items of clothing went up in flames with the building.
A complete opening, full-width end-gate to permit faster unloading of grain from farm trucks has been designed and tested by engineers of the Agricultural Marketing Service. This new end-gate should eliminate one bottleneck, which often develops around elevators because of time required to get the grain out of the truck.

Todd Uhlman, a central Illinois farmer, has created an unusual tribute to Ronald Reagan: A 15-acre corn maze carved in the likeness of the former president on his farm near Pekin, Ill.
Recent figures released by the USDA confirm what most Kentucky tobacco farmers already know: sales have declined for the fifth year in a row and what once was king in the state agriculturally has dropped to fourth place behind horses, cattle and broiler chickens, respectively.
