Some foods are known to bring everybody together

I’ve learned a lot about Florida from my son-in-law and daughter who live in Martin County, in a “regular folks” area. They also have given me a lot of information about what the super rich folks do in Palm Beach, Stuart and Jupiter Island.
My son-in-law is retired military and for a while helped a friend who has a pizza parlor with deliveries. He delivered pizzas to internationally known singers and entertainers and to internationally known sports stars – proving that really rich folks like a pizza now and then.
There are times and places where the rich folks and regular folks intermingle and treat each other as equals.
One such place is the VFW in Hobe Sound. All types shoot a game of pool, play some cards or kibbutz about where the best fish are biting, golf scores or the state of affairs everywhere.
The folks at the VFW also eat a lot of braunschweiger sandwiches, which outsell hamburgers. It’s not known who invented these, but since almost everybody puts some mayonnaise on the sandwich, it’s a good bet a genuine Florida cracker had a hand in it.
VFW Braunschweiger Sandwiches

Hamburger buns, onion buns or my favorite 12-grain bread
Light smear of mayonnaise on top and bottom bread or buns
Chopped onions
Braunschweiger slices 1/2-inch thick, covering the bottom bun
Cheese (I like Swiss cheese best, but your favorite is okay)
Smear mayonnaise on inside cut surface of buns. Rough chopped onions should cover the bottom bun. Put the cold braunschweiger slice on next and be sure it covers the bottom bun. Crown the sandwich with the top bun.
Lay the sandwich on a flat surface and press down  heavily with your hands. This makes the onions stick to the braunschweiger so they won’t be falling off. Hold the sandwich with both hands to keep it all together and enjoy.
These are always eaten cold but would probably be good if toasted. I plan to try this next time I’m hungry – in about 15 minutes.
