Carroll County’s 2014 soybean test was relatively disease-free

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ill. — Although surrounding plots saw pockets of disease, the Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (FIRST) soybean seed test plot hosted by Steve Hollewell in Carroll County was unaffected by disease according to FIRST Site Manager Jason Beyers.

They planted the trials on May 21 and harvested on Oct. 11.

"Steve (Hollewell) mentioned that the surrounding field averaged 65 bushels per acre, but there were pockets that were devastated by disease," Beyers said. "Plants (in the test plot) were tall with long internodes; this contributed to the lodging that was noted."

Beyers said several varieties retained their dead leaves, making for a dusty harvest. The top four hybrids each yielded more than 82 bushels per acre.

Cornelius variety CB28R58 yielded 82.8 bushels, with an estimated gross income of $853 per acre. Cornelius also took second place, with CB31R64 at 82.7 bushels, and a return of $852.

Titan Pro 25M22 came in third at 82.6 bushels and a gross income of $851 per acre, and Pioneer P28T33R brought in 82.5 bushels per acre, with an income of $850.

The test average was 75.9 bushels, with 10.5 percent moisture and average gross income of $782.
