Jersey organization names new area representative

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — Elizabeth Moss of Cottage Grove, Tenn. has recently been named an Area Representative for the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) and National All-Jersey Inc.

Moss joined the AJCA staff on a part-time basis in May of 2005 as an evaluator for the association’s Linear Type Traits Appraisal program. Her appointment as an Area Representative expands her assignments to include on-farm service in west Tennessee and Arkansas.

Moss earned a bachelor’s of science degree in dairy science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 2005. She completed a research internship at the University of Georgia’s Coastal Plains Experiment Station, and was an assistant lab technician at the Virginia State Forage Testing Lab. She also worked as a relief milker for a local dairy during college.

Moss was also a member of the Virginia Tech dairy judging team and earned awards at the regional and national American Dairy Science Association meetings for her dairy foods research paper in 2003. She was an active member of the Virginia Tech Dairy Club, holding the office of president during her senior year.

The American Jersey Cattle Assoc. is a dairy breed organization that compiles and maintains animal identification and performance data on Jersey cattle and provides services that support genetic improvement and profitability for Jersey dairy producers.


Michigan State dairy expert receives excellence award

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Joseph J. Domecq, professor and coordinator of the Institute of Agricultural Technology Dairy Management Program at Michigan State University was recently awarded the 2007 United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM) Excellence in Dairy Promotion Award.

On Feb. 15, Domecq accepted the honor at the annual UDIM Dairy Product Promotion seminar in Lansing, Mich. The award, sponsored by the UDIM Dairy Diplomats of Michigan, recognizes a person’s commitment and dedication to promoting dairy products. Individuals considered for the award possess extensive dairy promotion accomplishments and perform volunteer service to the state’s dairy industry and his/her local community.

Domecq was recognized for his leadership involvement with the Michigan Dairy Expo, the largest dairy event in the state, which includes opportunities for producers and more than 200 4-H members and other dairy youth from across Michigan.


Cnossen named Michigan ‘Dairy Farmer of the Year’

EAST LANSING, Mich. —Michigan State University Extension dairy educators and animal science faculty members recently awarded Harold Cnossen, a third-generation dairy farmer from Falmouth, Mich., the 2007 Dairy Farmer of the Year award.

Cnossen was honored for his lifelong commitment to family, farm and the dairy industry at the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference’s Dairy Industry Recognition Night on Feb. 9.

According to the Michigan State University’s Department of Animal Sciences, the Dairy Farmer of the Year award recognizes dairy leaders that have had an impact on the industry and are committed to promoting and improving the industry for Michigan dairy producers.

Cnossen’s history of service and accolades began in 1973, when he and his wife, Karen were named Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperators by the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA).
