It was a bad day for Art Moon’s Holstein cow; she’s a goner. The cow was killed at the 4400 block of the 109 Bypass after being struck by two southbound cars. The cow was standing in the center of the highway when struck, and dragged several feet further. Neither driver was hurt and damage to the cars was slight.

Fire destroyed the Marvin Gahimer home and all of its contents, two miles southwest of Arlington. The family was awakened by their collie dog’s whining at an upstairs bedroom door – the family escaped but the dog perished in the fire.

Indiana Gov. Otis R. Bowen has appointed Mrs. Guy Gross of Churubusco to the Indiana Vocational Technical College Board of Trustees to represent Indiana agriculture. She replaces Glenn Sample as a member of the board. Mrs. Gross is second vice president and director of the women’s department of Indiana Farm Bureau.

The 4-H Swine Grand Champion of the recent Indiana State Fair was a Duroc exhibited by Jeff Linn of New Ross. The barrow was purchased by the Indianapolis Livestock Market for $4,500.

The new world’s champion milk producer, Beecher Arlinda Ellen, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Beecher of Rochester, Ind., produced a maximum daily output of 28.23 gallons (195.5 pounds) of milk and in 305 days produced 50,314 pounds of milk, breaking the old record of 44,144 pounds. Ellen is a 6.5-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow.

Purdue University researchers have received a $5 million grant from NASA to study sustaining human life in outer space, reports Cary Mitchell, professor of plant physiology and director of the research.

George Winger of Boone County, Ind., shucked 44.02 bushels in 80 minutes to set a record back in 1940, on his 28th birthday. That record still stands today and he was recognized during the state husking championships at Lebanon. This year’s winner was Robert Slabaugh of LaGrange.
