Why did Jesus choose to suffer so deeply on cross?
John 15:13 — Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Suffering is a difficult thing. There are not many of us who would choose to suffer. In fact, most of us would gladly find a way to be relieved of our pain.

Sometimes I get the great idea to run. I want to be in shape. Especially as I am getting older I am realizing how crucial it is to keep the body toned and moving.

But when the burning in my chest and the weariness of my legs hit, I decide that walking is a better method for me. I abandon the running kick quickly when the discomfort becomes too much.

It would take a lot to keep me going despite the pain. In light of this I often marvel at how and why Jesus chose to suffer so deeply on the cross without turning back? There was no personal reason for Him to stay as He had no sin of His own. Yet He shouldered the burden of our sins and determined to pay the price for our freedom.

He was not held to the beams with metal spikes, though they pierced His hands and feet. At any moment He could have chosen to give up and relieve Himself of all the suffering and pain. But He continued enduring the mocking, embarrassing and excruciating agony for you and me. He was determined to fulfill His Father’s plan and purchase our salvation despite the suffering.

Jesus explained to his disciples right before he was arrested, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Within hours the Son of God then went on to demonstrate this truth.

Despite all He would suffer, He endured because of His great and perfect love for us.

Those who believe have been given a great gift of salvation as well as a responsibility. Jesus also said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. You are my friends if you do what I command you.”

Suffering is always a difficult thing. When I go out this morning for my daily exercise, I highly doubt I am going to be able to run the whole way. I expect that I will probably stop when the effort becomes too much. But I am so thankful that Jesus didn’t give up when He was hanging on the tree for our punishment because by His suffering we are healed.
