Sept. 7: Brad Mazanek will serve as a tour guide of his farm in Alma, Ill. beginning at 5:30 p.m. The tour will go through Mazanek’s apple and peach orchard and finish at his Orchard View Winery. Call 618-548-1446 to register.

Sept. 16-17: The Illinois Grape Growers & Vintners Assoc. will host the 14th annual Vintage Illinois Wine Festival at the Matthiessen State Park in Utica, Ill. The Festival’s hours are Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance and receive early admission to the event by going to www.

The cost is $25 (plus a $2.09 fee) in  advance, and it includes tasting tickets and a 2017 complementary wine glass.

Those who purchase tickets at the door, the cost is $30, and they will receive a complimentary Vintage Illinois wine glass and five tasting tickets. Those who buy tickets for Saturday may return Sunday with the wristband and glass and purchase ore tasting tickets. Attendees may bring a Designated Driver for a $5 (plus $1.27 fee), which includes three tickets for non-alcoholic beverages in advance and $7 at the door, while receiving two nonalcoholic beverage tickets.

Sept. 17: The DeKalb County Farm Stroll will be open from noon to 5 p.m. around Sycamore, Ill. This is a free, selfguided tour of the county’s diversified family farms. For more details, call the DeKalb Extension office at 815-758-8194.

Sept. 29: Scientists and students will come together to highlight innovative technologies in agriculture at the DuPont-Pioneer Plant Sciences Symposium at the ACES Library at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill. Sept. 23: The Hoosier Sheep Symposium will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the O.V. Winks Building at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Noblesville, Ind. Oct. 7: The Indiana Hand Corn Husking Contest will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Craig Geyer farm, 20565 Tyler Road in Bremen, Ind. This contest is open to all who enjoy old-fashioned corn husking. Participants in the timed contest will husk corn from one row, throwing the ears into a horse-drawn wagon. The corn is weighed and inspected for excess husks. Learn how to increase pasture productivity by attending the grazing basics workshop at the Ohio State University ATI campus in Wooster, Ohio. The workshop features morning classroom sessions combined with afternoon handson learning, demonstrations and practice sessions in the field. The cost of the workshop is $150 per person, which includes a grazing notebook, a pasture measurement stick, additional handouts, lunches and refreshments. A second person from a farm operation sharing a notebook is an additional $100. Preregistration is required by Sept. 25. Oct. 25-27: University of Tennessee Extension will present a workshop designed to help poultry farmers learn the basics of backyard poultry production and how to manage the risks of on-farm poultry processing. The workshop will be: Oct. 25 in Pikeville, Tenn.; Oct. 26 in Newport; and Oct. 27 in Jasper. The workshop in Pikeville and Jasper will begin at 10 a.m. and in Newport at 4:30 p.m. All times are local. Oct. 27-28: The Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Assoc., in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois State Fair Foundation, will host the Haunted Ethnic Illinois Wine Festival in Ethnic Village, Ill. at the State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill. from 6-10 p.m. Oct. 27 and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 28. Illinois wineries will showcase their wines along with ethnic foods.
