Kentucky B&B welcomes equine guests to stay, too

LA GRANGE, Ky. — Bed and breakfast accommodations while traveling are not so unique. What sets Bluegrass Country Estate apart is the accommodations for both human and equine guests.

You read that correctly. Built as a single-family home, innkeeper Cheryl Sabin turned her large luxury home into a B&B, and then built a matching barn for her own two horses. She had a barn constructed big enough to house six additional horses, with a fenced pasture and a wash station.

And visitors are welcome to enjoy the 25 miles of private trails in L’Espirit, just outside of La Grange.

Born in Hollywood to a mom who worked at Paramount Studios, Sabin has always loved to ride and as a young girl, she showed horses nationally. She said she spent many years traveling for work in the corporate world before deciding to settle down.

“I love to cook and I love to entertain, and I was tired of traveling,” she explained.

She heard about a seminar being hosted by a B&B organization in Kentucky and decided to look into it. “I met a couple with a B&B in Louisville, and they were Realtors, also. We started looking and I just knew this was the right place,” Sabin said.

The estate, located 35 miles from the Louisville International Airport, 77 miles from the Cincinnati Airport and 70 miles from the Lexington Blue Grass Airport, is in the heart of Kentucky horse country. Sabin said she has guests who return year after year for the Kentucky Derby.

With the Breeder’s Cup returning to Louisville this year, she has a huge countdown clock in her dining room ticking off the minutes to the big event.

Guests are greeted by her two canine companions, Angel and Sammy. He’s a big boy, and Sammy “smiles” a lot, but Sabin assures visitors he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

She offers a warm welcome before showing guests around through the house, with amenities including a game room, theater, workout room, several luxurious rooms – each with a theme – an in-ground pool and hot tub.

Leaving nothing to chance, Sabin inquires about any special dietary needs her guests may have and serves a delicious breakfast. Coffee, tea, cold drinks and snacks are available at any hour.

Although she doesn’t serve other meals, nearby La Grange offers several fast food options, as well as a handful of locally owned restaurants. The charming community also has railroad tracks that run down the middle of Main Street.
