Pieper receives
national Jersey honor

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — The American Jersey Cattle Assoc. (AJCA) recently named Jacob Pieper of White Hall, Md. as the 2007 recipient of the Fred Stout Experience Award.

The award was created in 2000 in memory of Fred J. Stout Jr., Mt. Carmel, Ill., a lifelong Jersey breeder and member of the Jersey Marketing Service staff from 1978 to 1997.

The Stout award will provide partial support for Pieper’s internship with the Jersey Marketing Service during the summer of 2007.

Pieper’s responsibilities will include preparation of sale catalogs and advertising, working with consignors to meet health test requirements and arrange trucking, and providing service to buyers. He will also work on the crews for the 50th National Heifer Sale, June 30 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, plus the Pride of the West Sale and Western Pot O’ Gold Sale, both scheduled for June 15 in Tillamook, Ore.

Pieper is a junior at Virginia Tech, majoring in dairy science and agricultural economics. He is active in the Virginia Tech Dairy Club and Alpha Gamma Rho, and currently serves as treasurer for both organizations.

He was raised on a Holstein and Guernsey dairy farm, where he works as assistant herd manager on weekends and during school breaks.


Tennessee junior
earns Angus award
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Walt Stinson, Talbott, Tenn. received the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver Awards.

Stinson is the 20 year-old son of Robert and Jan Stinson, and attends Tennessee Tech University. He has shown Angus cattle in numerous shows at the local, state and national level, and he has consigned cattle to Angus sales in Tennessee. Stinson also participated in the mentoring program, public speaking, the quiz bowl and the All-American Certified Angus Beef cookoff at the National Junior Angus Show.

The Bronze and Silver Awards are the first two levels of the National Junior Angus Association Recognition Program that began in 1972. junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards and then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors.


Ohio FFA members win
book evaluations contests
AMANDA, Ohio — The Amanda Clearcreek FFA Chapter recently announced several award winners in the District officer book evaluations and proficiency awards contest.

The Chapter Secretary Jodi Roush, Reporter Jessie Berisford and Treasurer Kayla Notestone submitted their records books for review in the local District contest. After being evaluated for completeness and accuracy, all of the books were presented with a gold rating.

“We put a lot of work into our books,” said Roush.
“It’s a lot of time and paperwork.”

Chapter members also participated in the District proficiency award contest. Proficiency awards are based on the members Supervised Agricultural Experience program (SAE). Each student enrolled in an agricultural course is required to have an SAE project. The program’s purpose is to develop student’s skills in record keeping, decision-making and experience in field of agriculture.
