U.S. Sen. Voinovich’s view: Holding myself accountable

Each year, I work diligently to compile my annual report – a document highlighting my accomplishments throughout the past year and the issues I have been working on as a United States Senator.
I find it to be an extremely effective way for me to voluntarily hold myself accountable to you, the taxpayers.
For each one of my eight years in the Senate I have written to you as a member of the majority party with chairmanship responsibilities and greater political consent.
This year, however, my annual report will share with you my efforts and accomplishments as a member of the minority, but more determined than ever to make a difference in the lives of Ohioans.
Although Republicans lost control of the Senate this year, we have redoubled our efforts to follow through on promises made to the American people. The challenges this change in leadership presented reminded me of similar experiences I faced as governor, working with the Democrat Legislature in Ohio.
This year, just as I did as governor, I have tried my hardest to overcome partisan politics, seeking bipartisan compromise and fairness. Republicans have worked twice as hard and I am very pleased with what we have accomplished.
Some of the highlights from this year are: my Mortgage Relief Act becoming law; Senate passage of my FHA Modernization Act; Senate passage of my National Infrastructure Improvement Act; Senate passage of my re-authorization of the Appalachian Regional Commission; securing a mission for NASA Plum Brook Station; Senate passage of my D.C. tag legislation – a tuition assistance grant program for D.C. students to attend college in states like Ohio; securing $300 million in Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) program funding for first responders through the appropriations cycle; and, finally, my bill expanding the Visa Waiver Program to countries that support the United States in the Global War on Terror being signed into law.
I am also fortunate to serve on the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee and as ranking member of EPW’s Subcommittee on Clean Air, Climate Change and Nuclear Safety.
I also serve on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC) Committee and serve as ranking member of HSGAC’s Subcommittee on the Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce and the District of Columbia.
And I remain a forceful voice on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
As your United States Senator, I believe it is vital that the federal government honor its commitments to its citizens, use taxpayer dollars more efficiently and bring continued growth to the economy.
That is why I have consistently concentrated my efforts in the Senate on four broad themes: fiscal responsibility, national security, American competitiveness and improving government.
My annual report is broken down into these four categories, reflecting how my work in the Senate meets my promises to Ohioans.
Additionally, I have an entire section dedicated to the work I have done in serving Ohio first.
For further details on the many accomplishments we saw in the first half of the 110th Congress, please contact my office and request your own copy of the annual report, which is available now.
Or, to view an electronic version of the document, please visit at www.voinovich.senate.gov and click on the “News Center” section.
Some of the work included in this document is unfinished and will be the subject of my continued efforts in 2008.
While you’re on my website, please also sign up for my monthly e-newsletter, a great way to stay informed throughout the year on what we’re working on in Washington and throughout Ohio.

I find my work and responsibilities in the United States Senate to be deeply fulfilling because I know that, with your help, we are making a difference for our state and our nation – particularly for our children and grandchildren. You have put a great trust in me and I am thankful for the privilege to serve you. I look forward to hearing your ideas on how together we can make Ohio and the nation a better place to live.
