Corn yields average 160s at a western Ohio test site

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Yields were in the 160 bushel per acre range for the early-and late-season tests of a corn seed trial in western Ohio this fall.

Stewart Seeds hybrid 7T630 won the early-season trial with an average of 187.6 bu. per acre.

It’s moisture content was 18.1 percent, and its estimated gross income per acre was $679.60.

The test was conducted by Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (F.I.R.S.T.) earlier this fall.

F.I.R.S.T. manager Rich Schleuning planted the field on May 13 at a rate of 30,000 seeds per acre. Approximately 22,600 plants per acre were harvested on Nov. 19.

“The heavy rains and cold temperatures after planting made it a tough emergence,” Schleuning reported.

“The thin stand took the full potential of this plot. The field around the plot had a final stand of 24,000. Stalk quality was starting to deteriorate as the plants reached full maturity.”

The trial was on the Clark County, Ohio farm of Larry Timmons. The soil in this field is a sandy clay.

The conventionally tilled field was non-irrigated and well drained. The pest management plan included Guardsman and Roundup.
The previous crop was soybeans treated with glyphosate.

The average yield in the early-season test for all of the hybrids tested at this location was 167.3 bu. per acre. The average moisture content was 18.2 percent, and $605.60 was the average estimated gross income per acre.

Only two other hybrids at this site exceeded 183 bu. per acre. Finishing second was iCorn.com hybrid 109.6VT3 at 183.5 bu. per acre. This variety had 17.5 percent moisture content, and its estimated gross income was $667.50 per acre.

Ebberts Field Seeds hybrid 2909VT3 came in third place with an average of 183.4 bu. per acre. This product had a moisture content of 18.4 percent, and its estimated gross income per acre was $663.

Full-season test

In the 111-114 day CRM, or full-season test, the average yields were slightly lower and the moisture content was slightly higher.
The average corn yield was 161.9 bu. per acre. The moisture content for all of the hybrids combined was 19.1 percent. As a result, the estimated gross income dropped to $582.50 per acre.
Winning the full-season test was Stewart Seeds hybrid 7T875 at 170.9 bu. per acre. This variety had an 18.9 percent moisture content, and its estimated gross income per acre was $615.70.
Other top producers in this test came from LG Seeds, Beck’s Hybrids, Great Lakes Hybrids and Steyer Seeds.

LG Seeds hybrid LG2549VT3 finished second by generating 169.2 bu. per acre. Its moisture content was 18.7 percent, and its estimated gross income was $610.20 per acre.

Producing 168.3 bu. per acre was Beck’s Hybrids 5779VT3, which was good enough for third. It had a 19 percent moisture content, and the variety’s estimated gross income was $606 per acre.
Great Lakes Hybrids 6455G3VT3 was fourth at 167.8 bu. per acre. The moisture content for this product was 19.4 percent, and the estimated gross income per acre was $602.40.

Steyer Seeds 1125HX rounded out the top five with a 167.2 bu. per acre average. The moisture content was 18.9 percent, and its estimated gross income per acre was $602.40.

A total of 36 hybrids were tested at the Springfield, Ohio site. A list of all the hybrids in this test is available at www.firstseedtests.com
