Western Ohio corn trial location is ‘garden spot’

CALEDONIA, Ohio — Fielders Choice, Channel and AgriGold scored the best results on the corn hybrid trials at a site in western Ohio in November.

Fielders Choice hybrid NG6820 won the full-season test with an average yield of 260.9 bushels per acre. Fielders Choice variety NG6729 was second in the early-season test at 254.8 bu. per acre.
The trial was conducted by Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (F.I.R.S.T.) on the Marion County, Ohio farm of Gerold Scekel.

“It was great to see another garden spot,” reported F.I.R.S.T. manager Rich Schleuning. “(Scekel) is seeing the best crop of his life.”

Schleuning planted the field on May 22 at a rate of 35,000 seeds per acre. He was able to harvest an estimated 31,500 plants per acre on Nov. 13.

“Considering the wet spring, you thought there was no way we would see a yield like this,” Schleuning explained. “Stalk and plant quality was good, as harvest was slowed only due to the high yields.
Channel hybrid 210-57VT3 won the early season test with a yield of 262.2 bu. per acre. In the full-season trial, Channel variety 213-32VT3 produced 252.6 bu. per acre, which was good enough for second place.

A pair of AgriGold products finished third in both tests. In the early-season trial, AgriGold A6456VT3 generated 244.6 bu. per acre; and in the full-season test, AgriGold A6489VT3 brought in 250 bu. per acre.

The soil type for this test was a sandy clay loam.

The non-irrigated field was well drained. There was conventional tillage in the fall.

The pest management plan included Confidence Extra and Hornet. The previous crop on this site was soybeans treated with glyphsate.
