Ohio’s 64 Metals not only builds, but will teach, too

By CELESTE BAUMGARTNER

ST. LOUISVILLE, Ohio — Most of the things we buy nowadays are manufactured overseas. But not the post-frame buildings and pole barns sold by 64 Metals. They’re manufactured by the Green family here in Ohio.

After the Greens – Clarence, who was once a farmer, and his sons, Walter and Wayne – had been constructing post-frame building for several years, they had an opportunity to get in on the manufacturing end of the business, Wayne Green said.

“We began manufacturing just for ourselves and then started putting ads out, and the business grew from there,” he said.
Three years ago they designed their new Legacy Series steel truss system, patent pending.

It gives the customer 33 percent more space; at the same time, it combines the ease of the post-frame building for construction with the advantages of a steel building.

“The customer ends up with flush walls – side walls, and the cathedral ceiling,” Green said. “It reduces labor time by 20 to 25 percent.”

The cathedral ceiling provides more head space for riding arenas, stacking hay, a car lift or getting a recreational vehicle (RV) inside. It adds 33 percent more space to the building.

Many building codes will only allow a 10-foot building, yet RVs are often 12 feet high.

64 Metals can build the building for its customers, but employees will also teach the customer how to build it.

Each month they hold the 64 Metals University, a free seminar where customers can learn how to build a post-frame building or see the buildings the company offers, which are manufactured in St. Louisville.

“We have a 4,000 square-foot indoor showroom,” Green said. “People can come and see what they’re buying before they buy it.”
Since 2002, 64 Metals has sold more than 2,000 buildings.
“One year we sold 375 buildings when the residential market was high, but they were smaller buildings,” Green said. “The market has changed. The buildings have gotten a lot bigger.”

64 Metal’s continuous innovation has received industry attention and praise. Recently, two of its custom building designs were awarded 2007 Best of the Year awards by the Buckeye Frame Builders Assoc.

As an “Accredited Post-Frame Builder,” it is among a select group of post-frame builders nationally who have met the National Frame Builders Assoc. requirements. “It’s more than a building; it’s your dream,” is 64’s motto.
