The Lord, my shepherd, restores the soul

By Sandra Sheridan

Psalm 23:3 “He restores my soul . . .”
The busyness of our culture often creates chaos that disturbs every area of our life. How does one experience respite from physical, mental and emotional stress? The Lord, our Shepherd, restores the soul.
Some weeks explode with activity. When this happens, I usually shift into high gear to propel myself through all the things on my calendar. Days go by without any reprieve until the effects of my rampage catch up with me. My energy sputters and an empty tank leaves me worn and weary on the side of the road.
This kind of constant activity and stress affects every area of our lives. We don’t have time to eat healthy meals and sleep evades us as we lay awake thinking about what’s left to accomplish. And typically, our spiritual life suffers as well. All the commitments leave little room for spending daily time with God. And our weary bodies, cluttered minds and jumbled emotions soon crave rejuvenation.
This kind of frenzy prompted me to revisit the familiar and much-loved Psalm 23. The beautiful poem written by David took on new meaning as I tried to catch my breath from a demanding week. Pictures of a loving shepherd tenderly caring for his sheep soothed my soul as I reminded myself that the Lord cares deeply for me. While His love extends to all mankind there is a special personal relationship with those who claim Him as their Lord and Savior. These He shows special care.
A good shepherd makes his sheep lie down in green pastures. And my Shepherd provides the rest I need in the midst of all the chaos. He creates space to nourish my heart along with my physical body and mind. The quiet waters sooth out of control emotions and allow me to drink deeply of His much-needed comfort. He takes my hand and leads me away from the raging river of obligations to a place of mental peace. He guides me in the path of right thinking for His name’s sake, so I prioritize my relationship with Him. All of these restore my languishing soul so I thrive despite numerous responsibilities.
Our loving Shepherd supplies resources on which we must rely. The upcoming weeks of a busy New Year may threaten stress and exhaustion. Our fuel tanks may run the risk of reaching empty. But don’t let the chaos control your life. Instead take a moment every day to spend time with your Shepherd. Let the Lord provide everything you need. And in the midst of all the chaos He will restore your soul!
