Tractor pulls are about friendships more than competition
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn – It’s midday Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Bedford County fairgrounds. Three-quarter ton pickup trucks pull up hauling trailers with 70 and 80-year-old tractors. Some of the tractors are brightly colored restorations. Some look as though they were just dragged out of a field after years of neglect. There’s Minneapolis Molines, Allis-Chalmers, McCormick Farmalls, a Cockshutt and, of course, John Deeres. Each trailer has two tractors on board. |

Walking in the shadow of hope |
The first obvious sign of the season-long flood is a perfectly level, three-foot high ring of dried mud on the machine shed’s siding. Nature put it there and, in time, will likely wash it away. |

There are lots of unique things about our country, but one of the most amazing is the First Amendment to the Constitution. It is amazing because never before had these six rights been put in one place, all at the same time, and been guaranteed by the force of law. Freedom of religion, speech, press, petition, and assembly are liberties that have shaped our society, our history, and our government. This amendment’s rights are so basic that most people take them for granted and give their protection little thought. |

Don’t offend the camp cook unless you want to be on the menu
I learned in a West Texas cookhouse that when your mouth is full of bull its best to keep it shut. I was a journeyman journalist that had been sent to a 200,000 acre West Texas ranch that was long on history but short on social graces. It was my misfortune to show up the same day as a visiting professor from the University. I was there to write a story, the stall-fed Professor was there to be critical. We were both about as welcome as a wet dog. |
