Western Ohio Agronomy Field Day set for July 21
Tired already of this year’s cropping challenges? Would you like to learn how to minimize the impact of adverse conditions? Do you like to swap your cropping stories with specialists, consultants and other farmers? Answering yes to any or all of the previous questions and $15 qualifies you to attend the July 21 Western Agronomy Field Day near South Charleston, Ohio.

The event is being held at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) Western Agricultural Research Station, 7721 South Charleston Pike, South Charleston, Ohio, which is just south of I-70 and Springfield on St. Rt. 41.

The field day is an opportunity for farmers, industry specialists, certified crop advisers and other interested individuals to view some of the latest projects taking place at the research station, and compare research results to their own on-farm situations. The day also provides an opportunity to interact with university specialists and discuss problems and solutions for current field problems and potential future research.

Last year, the Western Agronomy Field Day showcased over 200 different research projects from nearly 30 researchers from Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Plan to check in between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. to catch the 9 a.m. to noon wagon tour of the Agronomic Crops Trails at Western Branch. Hear from the following Ohio State University Extension Specialists reviewing their favorite subjects.

•Pierce Paul - Wheat and Corn Disease Issues
•Mark Loux - Weed Management Issues for 2010
•Mark Sulc – Forage Management Issues, Fertility Management
•Anne Dorrance – White Mold, Wide Rows & Fungicides
•Peter Thomison – N Rate Impacts by Planting Date and Populations in Corn

Noon box lunches precede a 12:45 p.m. Ohio Plant Diagnostic Network update by Nancy Taylor who will discuss local new capabilities now available at the station and across Ohio.

After your energy is restored by lunch, be sure to take advantage of the in-depth discussion with the specialist of your choice. Many of these stops will be back in the field with the state specialist’s plots between 1 and 3 p.m.

Pre-registration is required by July 19; $15 per person to Harold Watters, OSU Extension, Champaign County, 1512 South US Hwy. 68, Suite B100, Urbana, OH 43078; 937-484-1526; watters.35@osu.edu

I plan to attend and hope to meet a few Farm World readers there! Looking for family fun, agricultural exhibitions plus a chance to see old friends and make new ones? Be sure to attend your county fair and maybe even a neighboring fair or two. Sampling fair food while checking out a 4-H/FFA livestock show is an experience tough to beat!
