Charges of selling hogs at incorrect weights for their own advantage have been filed against five registered hog dealers at the Indianapolis Stockyards by the USDA. The parties are dealers, and not commission firms at the yards.
Principal activities of the week were soybean combining, wheat seeding in the northern half of the state, tomato picking, some hay making silo filling and corn picking in the south. About half of the soybeans have been harvested and half of the apples have been picked. Two-thirds of the barley has been seeded and three-fifths of the rye. Nearly a third of the wheat has been seeded. The Hamilton County team won the Indianapolis District 4-H and FFA land judging contest. Coached by Earl Scott, the team members compiled a score of 632 points. Members were Keith Bowers, Noblesville; Stanley Dick, Cicero; and Bob Gordon and Jack Gordon of Arcadia. The second-place team was from Decatur. Top individual scorer was Jack Gordon of Hamilton County, with 221 points.

Mike Flock, 17 of Ramsey, Ind., defeated 4-H Club contestants from 19 other states recently in the Eastern United States tractor operating contest at Richmond, Va., to win the championship of the national contest.
Officers for Indiana’s Hoosier Spring Barrow Show have been selected: Bill Nash, chair; Gene Shaver, vice chair; J.W. Ralph Bishop, manager; Ken Kohls, assistant manager; and Pete Dodson, treasurer. The event will be at the Indiana State Fair swine barn Feb. 14-19, 1972.
The Kennard Lions of Henry County are busy with preparations for their annual Ox Roast. Two prime steers from the Leland Kendall herd have been selected for this year’s feast. The Tri-High Livestock Judging Team was selected first place for the state of Indiana and is competing at the national show in Kansas City. Members of the team are Bruce Bean, Gary Batson, Mark Pickering and Jim Beam, who will serve as alternate. Don Watkins is the chapter advisor and coach.

A number of Indiana and other Midwest farmers have reported their corn and, in some cases their soybeans, are sprouting in the fields. The situation is attributed to the extreme wet and warm weather of recent weeks.
Dale and Brenda Mantooth, the Rush County couple who have been battling Farm Credit Services for possession of their farm, may have lost the final bout. The Henry County Circuit Court ordered earlier this month the sale of 82.1 acres of farm and residential property. It includes the couple’s home as well as that of Brenda’s mother.

A man who never set foot on the Purdue University campus has given the school land and timber valued at more than $21.2 million. Fred van Eck, a New York-based financier, decided to put the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources and its hardwood tree improvement research in his will.
A gourd weighing in at 698 pounds gave the top prize and $300 to Don VanHoute II in a regional Great Pumpkin Weigh-off. It took seven men to lift the champion pumpkin.
FFA is 457,278 students strong. This new total represents an 18-year high for the organization. There are 7,312 local chapters nationwide.
