Gail Maurer, Harrison Township farmer, was named president of the Fayette County Free Fair Assoc. William McClure of Posey Township was named vice president; Clyde Berry, treasurer; Willard Funk, secretary; and Maurice Scott was appointed assistant secretary. Paul Crane, Purdue University research agronomist, says using an adapted one-row corn picker was able to speed up the harvest of corn varieties under test in nine Indiana counties this fall. The one-row picker did the work of 20 men in harvesting 24 Indiana certified hybrids, 86 private company hybrids and 189 experimental hybrids, on the Purdue agronomy farm northwest of Lafayette.
Purdue will again be offering the Eight Weeks Short Course in Agriculture beginning on Jan. 2. There are three fields being offered: one in general agriculture, another in animal husbandry and one in dairy production. Applicants must be 18 years old and have a good common school education.
Twenty-four farm neighbors of Wood Eliason near Centerville did a one-day corn-picking job on his 35-acre field. Mr. Eliason has been ill since the first of August and was unable to harvest his corn. A yield of 2,000 bushels was expected from the field.

National 4-H Congress in Chicago, Ill., will be highlighted on its Golden Anniversary this month. There will be 46 talented and energetic Hoosier 4-H Club youths representing Indiana’s many clubs.

Indiana state average for 2001 on corn yield was 160 bushels per acre and soybean yields were at 49 bushels per acre, reports Chris Hurt, an agricultural economist from Purdue.
Archer Daniels Midland Co. and several other food processors are selling grain and soybeans to Cuba for the first time in four decades, because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Michelle. The Central Illinois Ag Coalition intends to build a plant capable of producing 30 million gallons of ethanol a year just south of Canton in Fulton County. The proposed $40 million facility, named Central Illinois Energy, would be the state’s second producer-owned ethanol plant. |
