FAYETTE, Ohio — Hybrids in both the early- and full-season tests crossed the 200-bushel per acre barrier during a seed trial in Fulton County earlier this fall.

The trial was conducted by Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (F.I.R.S.T.) on the northwestern Ohio farm of Randy Carothers.

LG Seeds LG2602VT3 earned a yield of 201.9 bushels per acre to win the full-season trial. This LG Seeds product had a moisture content of 33.3 percent, and it had an estimated gross income of $1,161.10 per acre.

In the early-season test, Specialty Seeds 8390GENSS earned a top yield of 202.1 bushels per acre. This hybrid had a moisture content of 28.3 percent, and its estimated gross income was $1,192.60 per acre. Also earning high marks were G2 Genetics 5H-905 with 202 bushels per acre, and Steyer Seeds 10701 with 200.6 bushels per acre.

The field was planted at 33,000 seeds per acre on May 29. The soil is a sandy loam that is well drained. It is a non-irrigated, no-till field. The crops were treated with Keystone and Aztec. F.I.R.S.T. Site Manager Rich Schleuning harvested the field on Nov. 1 at a rate of 31,100 plants per acre.

“Over seven inches of rainfall in May delayed planting until the end of the month,” Schleuning reported. “A strong windstorm in July caused root lodging and goose-necked corn in the area, but somehow missed the plot.

“From July through the second week of August, only one inch of rain was received. The late planting date combined with the cool, September temperatures made grain moistures very high.”

Other top yields from the full-season test were: Steyer Seeds 10903, 197 per acre; FS Seeds FS 60MV4, 194.1; and Rupp Seeds XR8500, 190.

In the early-season test, top performers included: Rupp Seeds XR8239, 197.6; G2 Genetics 5H-0701, 197.2; Stine 9529VT3Pro, 196.2; Stewart 6V556, 195.7; and Rupp XR8213, 195.3.
