1957: Indiana Future Farmers welcoming 21 more chapters

A 350-pound Duroc gilt produced two litters totaling 21 pigs within a week for Jon Jones of near Middletown. The gilt farrowed 11 pigs on the first date and 10 more came four days later. The gilt did not have milk for the first litter, but did for the second. Two of the surviving first pigs are being fed on a formula.

The Indiana Assoc. of Future Farmers of America announces an increase of 21 chapters, bringing its membership to nearly 10,000 boys in 355 high schools. The Indiana association was charted in 1929. K.W. Kiltz of Purdue University’s education department is executive secretary-treasurer.

Gov. Edgar Whitcomb signed a special proclamation denoting FFA Week in Indiana during the National FFA week. Those in attendance for the signing were current state officers David Cosby, Wolcott; Al Niedlinger, Plymouth; John Fox, Michigantown; Marty Matlock, Knightstown; Albert Schmidt, Poseyville; Dave Allen, Huntington; and Dewey Steard, state FFA advisor.

They are Francis Beck, Atlanta; Sherman Kessler, New Ross; Henry Nierman, Brownstown; Russell Norris, Rushville; and Dwight Smoker, Wanatah.

Jerry Sinclair of Cloverdale won the Nash Trophy for the Boar-of-the-Year award. The award was presented to him by Dave Rodibaugh of Rensselaer, president of the Indiana Livestock Breeders Assoc.

A rare set of twin Clydesdale fillies were born to a mare named Cis, belonging to Duane and Shelly Whitesel of Farmersville-West Carrollton Road in Montgomery County, Ohio. Unfortunately, the filly named Hope died within a few days after being born.
