Illinois Performance-Tested Bull Sale boasts record
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Performance-Tested (IPT) Bull Sale was the lead-off event of the 2012 Illinois Beef Expo held on Feb. 23 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill. The sale had the highest overall average in the 44-year history at $3,445 on 77 lots.

There were four breeds represented in the 2012 sale: Angus, Simmental, Polled Hereford, and Red Angus. Seibert said a yearling Angus bull set a new IPT Bull Sale record, selling for $8,800. The bull, Kramers Mandate 112, was sold by Kramer Angus of Farina, Ill., to Alta Genetics of Watertown, Wis.

The University of Illinois (U of I) Extension, U of I Department of Animal Sciences, and consigning breeders sponsored the sale. Also, Vita Ferm, Illinois Angus Association, and Illinois Simmental Association provided industry support, Seibert said. Producers interested in viewing a breakdown of all the prices can visit the IPT Bull Sale website at www.IPTBullSale.com Also included on this site are the individual bull prices from the 2012 sale and the numbers and averages from the previous 43 sales.

560-acre Indiana farm averages $9,680 per acre
MT. VERNON, Ind. — A 560-acre farm in Mt. Vernon, Ind. recently sold at auction on Wed., Feb. 29.

Kurtz Auction and Realty Company conducted the auction that resulted in a sale price of $5.423 million or an average sale price of $9,680 per acre. The acreage was divided into nine tracts with improvements (grain bins and barns) on Tract 6. One hundred and forty-five plus acres of mostly tillable cropland with road frontages on Old State Route 69, Seibert Lane and Bellefontaine Cemetery Road sold for $12,600 per acre and was purchased by a local farmer/investor. Tract 4, 53.19 acres, was all cropland with only an easement (no frontage) sold for $10,000 an acre.

According to Auctioneer Jason Blue, that is a good indicator for what pure cropland will bring. The balance tracts sold to local farmers/investors. Tracts five, six and seven were influenced by city zoning and sold for an average of $10,389 per ace. The smallest tract of 14.83 acres sold for $11,100 per acre and one tract west of Mt. Vernon sold for $5,800 per acre. Blue stated that there were over 250 in attendance at the auction with several active bidders.
