Michigan Commodity Report - May 2, 2012
From the Michigan Corn Growers Assoc.

As we enjoy the warmer temperatures of spring, the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan (CMPM) and the Michigan Corn Growers Assoc. (MCGA) would like to wish our state’s corn growers well as they head to the fields to begin spring planting.

As we plant the seeds for what we hope will be a bright season, it’s an appropriate time to consider agriculture’s future. With that, the MCGA is proud to announce the recipients of the 2012 MCGA scholarship award program.

This year, the MCGA awarded nearly $10,000 in scholarships to 13 talented students throughout Michigan. The MCGA Scholarship Committee consisted of board members Tom Durand, committee chair and a corn grower from Croswell; Ed Breitmeyer, a corn grower from Buckley; and Scott Lonier, MCGA vice president and corn grower from Lansing.

According to Durand, the scholarship committee received many applications and was impressed by the high caliber of the students who applied. The only downside was deciding which of the talented student would receive scholarships.

MCGA wishes to congratulate the following students who have been awarded an MCGA scholarship for the 2012-13 school year:
•High school seniors: Caitlin Clover, Rockford; Karlie Goretski, Kinde; Connie Heleski, Ubly; Nathan Krohn, Elkton; Justin Kruithoff, Kent City; and Darcy Lipskey, Minden City.

•College students: Lucas Constanza, Sodus; Jeffrey Dreves, Buckley; Ashley Frye, Palmyra; Katelyn Horning, Manchester; Janelle Kirsch, Harbor Beach; Chelsea Koroleski, Kinde; and Andrea Schuette, Elkton.

The students will be recognized at the MCGA Annual Meeting on Feb. 5, 2013, at Cooley Law School in Lansing.

Students in an accredited agricultural program are eligible for a one-year membership in the MCGA, for $20. Grower and associate memberships in the MCGA are $60 for one year, $155 for three years or $500 for a lifetime. By becoming a member of the MCGA, you automatically become a member of the National Corn Growers Assoc. (NCGA), too.

For more information or if you would like to purchase a membership, please contact the MCGA office at 888-323-6601.

T-shirt contest celebrates Ethanol Night at the Races

Do you know a budding young artist looking for an opportunity to showcase their artwork? Someone who could use some extra money for their future? If so, then let them know that MCGA is looking for a creative, engine-revving design for its annual Ethanol Night at the Races T-shirt Design Contest.

The MCGA Ethanol Night at the Races event is an annual membership appreciation night for MCGA members and their families, at Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run. Attendees enjoy a full night of great food, fellowship and racing while celebrating Michigan’s $223 million ethanol industry and the benefits of the American-made fuel.

All Ethanol Night at the Races attendees receive a complimentary T-shirt, and this year it could feature your young artist’s design.
MCGA membership is not required for participation, and all interested artists who are Michigan residents 21 years of age or younger are encouraged to enter. Designs must be racing-, ethanol- or field corn-related (not sweet corn) and must be no smaller than 6-by-8-inches and no larger than 12-by-14 inches.
Entered designs must be hand-drawn or computer-generated and suitable for four-color screen printing onto a white T-shirt. Participating artists may submit only one design and all entries must be received at the Michigan Corn office by 5 p.m. on June 8.
Jeff Sandborn, MCGA president, said the T-shirt Design Contest is a great way for young people to learn about corn and ethanol, while being able to think creatively and use their talents. He encourages artists to visit our website at www.micorn.org or use other resources to learn about Michigan’s corn and ethanol industries and incorporate that knowledge into their designs.
The winning design, selected by the MCGA board, will be printed onto more than 1,000 T-shirts to be distributed at the Ethanol Night at the Races event Sept. 8. The artist of the winning selection will receive a $150 VISA gift card, a free T-shirt with their design and two tickets to the event.

For more information on this exciting opportunity, please visit www.mi corn.org or call 888-323-6601 to obtain the complete contest rules and official contest entry form.
