40 years ago Alfalfa weevil is spreading in Indiana. David Matthew, Purdue University extension entomologist, advises farmers to examine fields to determine the need to spray for weevil control. Sickle Suffolk’s of Winchester, Ind., will hold its first production sale at the 4-H grounds in Winchester. Duane Sickle started raising Suffolk sheep 15 years ago as a 4-H club member and now owns 300 head of sheep. Auctioneer for the sale will be Roland Rosenboom of Clifton, Ill.
25 years ago Crop report: Indiana tillage is 90 percent complete, corn planting is 8 percent done. Winter wheat is rated 65 percent good, with 25 percent roughly at the joint stage and 10 inches tall. Oat seeding is 92 percent complete, tobacco is virtually all planted, pasture quality is 61 percent good. Soil moisture is 66 percent adequate for topsoil and subsoil is 75 percent adequate.
