A new wheat disease, fungus leaf stripe, has appeared in a few fields in west-central and northern Indiana, according to Purdue University plant pathologists. Diseased plants will be stunted and fail to produce normal grain.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bennett will be hosts for the annual Duroc State picnic at their Melody Lane farm, just north and west of Linden. Selection of the new Indiana Duroc Queen will be made at the picnic and Mr. Bennett will have some classes of pigs for members to judge.

Having sold his farm for health reasons, Claude Archie Ellis will sell the personal property at the farm, one mile east then one mile north of Mays (Rush County), consisting of hogs, hog equipment, machinery and equipment and household goods – Hoyt Vanderbeck, Auctioneer.

Based on conditions from May, Indiana’s winter wheat crop is expected to total 34.8 million bushels in the first production forecast of the season. This is up 16 percent from the 30.1 million bushels produced in 1986.

The Turkey Run High School livestock judging team captured first place at the nine-county Area V 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Contest. Members are Matt Pefley, Rockville; Jamie Steffy, Tangier; Chris Davies, Rockville; Kirt Ramsay, Rockville; and coached by FFA instructor Melvin Clodfelter.

Central Soya, a leading soybean processor based in Fort Wayne, Ind., announced it has acquired full ownership of CanAmera Foods of Canada. Central Soya is the North American operating unit of Cereol S.A.

The $110 million Kentucky Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, a state-federal effort, is the largest agricultural conservation program in state history for Kentucky, and it targets the Green River basin.

The first ever ethanol research plant, a facility designed to act as a link between laboratory testing and the commercialization of ethanol plant technologies, is on track for a January 2003 opening at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The facility is 20,000 square feet, at a cost of $20 million.
