Virtual hearing on Indiana raw milk sales ends Sept. 1
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — This is the last week for Hoosiers to submit their comments about the sale of raw milk in Indiana. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health opened a “virtual public hearing” June 1 to gather input from the public without the geographic and time limitations of a traditional public hearing.
The hearing will close on Sept. 1. This is the public’s last chance to submit comments for or against the sales of raw milk, as well as suggestions for any potential change to Indiana law. Those who submit comments must provide a name and contact information, in case follow-up is needed.
The virtual public hearing webpage is accessible at www.boah.in.gov by clicking on the “What’s New” link or the main banner until Sept. 1. Those without Internet are welcome to submit comments by U.S. Mail to: BOAH - Attn: Raw Milk Comments, Discovery Hall, Suite 100, 1202 E. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46205-2898.
Feds sue SW Michigan farm over migrant housing
DOWAGIAC, Mich. (AP) — The federal government is accusing a southwestern Michigan farm of failing to follow a 2010 agreement to improve housing for migrant workers.
The Labor Department last week filed a petition for civil contempt in federal court. The government said Berrybrook Enterprises and owner Joe Hassle Sr. have failed to meet a number of conditions, from adequate water supplies to screens, to rodent control.
The complaint seeks compliance as well as fines to cover the cost of the follow-up investigation. Berrybrook attorney Stephanie Setterington declined to comment on the allegations but said the farm is committed to treating workers humanely.
The farm is based in Dowagiac in Cass County, 45 miles southwest of Kalamazoo, but it also has camps in Van Buren County. The camps are licensed for hundreds of people.
Crews begin rebuilding after soybean plant fire
CHARLOTTE, Mich. — Crews began to rebuild Friday after a fire caused significant damage to a soybean processing facility on North Cochran Road in Charlotte.
According to the Michigan Agri-Business Assoc., the fire was detected by employees of Citizens, LLC at 7:45 a.m. Thursday. The Charlotte Fire Department was notified and responded immediately. They were joined by departments from several surrounding communities. Crews battled the fire for roughly four hours before it was completely extinguished.
“The most important thing is that no employees or emergency responders were injured in the incident,” said Robert Mansfield, co-owner of Citizens LLC, who commended responding departments for saving the structure and much of the equipment.
The internal working bins, elevation equipment, roof, electrical equipment and inventory were severely damaged. The remainder of the facility was untouched, and Citizens, LLC reopened for business. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
