55 years ago About 3,200 chickens were burned in a fire that destroyed a large barn on the Lawrence Lindley farm south of Hagerstown, Ind. The chickens were estimated at $6,000; and 2,000 bales of hay, 2,500 bushels of oats, 200 bales of straw and more than five tons of mixed feed also burned.
The Lindleys were away from the home at the time, but Denver Karn, a farm employee, was alerted by a passerby that the building was on fire.

Roberta Ann Carpenter, 24, is beginning her first assignment at Sandusky High School in Decatur County as the vocational agriculture teacher. Miss Carpenter grew up on a farm near Winchester and received her teaching degree at Purdue University. Her duties will also include the adult farmers’ extension classes. She is believed to be the first woman agriculture teacher in Indiana in the last 25 years.
40 years ago Dogs attacked and killed two full-grown ewes at the home of Dale Moffett, south of Greensburg. An 800-pound steer was also attacked, but was not seriously injured, according to police. The steer chased the dogs away. Value of the sheep was placed at $40. Two farms for sale on open bids. The farms consist of 180 acres, more or less, in Decatur-Bartholomew counties east of Hope and west of Burney. Another farm is in Rush County, west of Rushville, consisting of 175.28 acres, more or less. Farms belong to the W.D. Cox and Ella C. Cox estate; bids to be submitted to the Farmers National Bank in Shelbyville, Ind.
Deere and Co. announced it is returning to bicycle manufacturing after more than 80 years. This will continue the expansion of the line of recreational products, which began with the snowmobiles last fall, say John Deere officials.

Due to the slump in the farm sector the past few years, undergraduate enrollment in agricultural programs at Purdue are the lowest since the mid-1960s. Enrollment is at 1,640 students, 250 fewer than a year ago.
A $34,500 sale of the Grand Champion Country Ham at the Kentucky State Fair Country Ham Breakfast has provided the initial contribution to a newly announced Charles E. Barnhart Scholarship Fund, to support academic excellence at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture.
The ham was purchased by Anna Hirtron, granddaughter of Louisville developer Al Schneider. The buyer designated the scholarship to receive the funds. Dr. Barnhart has been dean of the ag college since 1969.
