Michigan Commodity Report - Oct. 3, 2012
From the Michigan Corn Growers Assoc.

The Michigan Corn Growers Assoc. (MCGA) has recognized U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) as its Legislator of the Year, for her work in advancing the issues important to Michigan corn growers and agriculture.

Stabenow was presented the award by MCGA Executive Director Jim Zook and MCGA board member Scott Miller, a corn farmer from Elsie, during a pre-race ceremony at Ethanol Night at the Races on Sept. 8, at Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run.

As chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Stabenow has a powerful and unique role to play in shaping our nation’s agriculture policies, which are so critical to our future. Zook pointed to her work on the farm bill and protecting the Renewable Fuels Standard as key reasons for honoring Stabenow, who was first elected to the Senate in 2000.

Her work has also been recognized on the national level. National Corn Growers Assoc. (NCGA) President Garry Niemeyer recently presented the NCGA’s President’s Award to Stabenow during NCGA’s Corn Congress meeting in Washington, D.C.

Ethanol Night at the Races sets record for attendance

A record crowd of more than 1,100 corn growers, their families and industry supporters gathered at the MCGA 2012 Ethanol Night at the Races on Sept. 8. Ethanol Night at the Races, a yearly highlight for MCGA members, is a way for the MCGA to promote the use of ethanol while combining great food, fellowship and a full night of racing.

MCGA President Jeff Sandborn said Ethanol Night at the Races is a great outlet for corn farmers to showcase the many uses for ethanol and also have a fun night out with their families. He said the annual event shows how agriculture can help consumers lessen our nation’s dependence on foreign oil and lower our gasoline costs through increased ethanol usage.

In addition to a steak dinner and a full night of racing, MCGA members also had the opportunity to examine many ethanol-powered projects from Kettering University students.

Ethanol Night at the Races is truly a member’s event, and two MCGA members who always go the extra mile in assisting with this are Mark Bauer, a Pioneer seed dealer from Reese, and Don Morse, who in addition to being Saginaw County Corn Growers Assoc. president and a Birch Run corn grower, is also a Pioneer seed dealer.

Mark and Don are instrumental in the event, as they and the corn growers of Saginaw County work diligently every year to help host the dinner.

The MCGA would also like to thank the event sponsors, who are key to making this event possible. They include: ADM Grain Co.; The Andersons Albion Ethanol, LLC; Carbon Green BioEnergy, LLC; Crop Production Services; DuPont Pioneer; Great Lakes Hybrids; Growers National Cooperative; Monsanto; P&C Ag Solutions; Poet Biorefining; and Tri County Equipment.
