Indiana farmers are raising a record crop of 2.59 million turkeys this year, 26 percent more than last year, according to Purdue agricultural statisticians.

Ag classes are being taught at Lewisville High School for the first time in more than 20 years. William Mattix is teaching the classes and his senior class consists of Gerald Cole, Donald Sumpter, Allen Schwartz, Stephen Hause, Richard Coffman, Jim Greenwell, Phillip Burris and James Shew.

World Champion Palomino award was given to Circle P’s Top Man, a double-registered Palomino horse owned by Wayne and Norma Harmons of the Franklin, Ind., area.

Three livestock barns were destroyed by fire at the Ohio State Fairgrounds during the North American Dairy Show. All show animals were believed to be safe. The open show was under way when the fire broke out. Orders were given for showmen to the barns to save their cattle.

It took only 15 minutes, evacuating more than 2,000 head of cattle. Area cattle owners Carson Wright, Stephen White, Danny Upchurch and Gary Groves lost their trucks due to the fire.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued a national advisory warning animal health officials that research materials, as well as a small amount of swine pneumonia bacteria, was stolen from The Michigan State University’s Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.
