Miami East FFA teams compete in District 5 contest
CASSTOWN, Ohio — Recently, seven members of the Miami East FFA Chapter competed in the District 5 Food Science and Technology Contest hosted at Versailles High School.
“Blue” Team members included Amber Johnson, Tyler Church, Amanda Hill and Casey Hess. The Blue Team placed second. The “White” Team consisted of Tyler Schindel, Michael Williams, and Parker Davis. The White Team placed eighth.
Amber Johnson was the highest placing individual member from the chapter, placing third out of 34 individuals.
During the contest the team members were asked to complete a product development scenario in which they calculated the nutritional facts for a new food product and design a new package. Also they completed an aroma identification section, took a written test, responded to a mock customer complaint letter, identified sanitation errors in the food industry, and completed a taste sensory test.
Katarina, Baron, Steven & Zachary Rieker earn Junior Silver Awards
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Siblings Katarina, Baron, Steven and Zachary Rieker, all of Columbus, Ind., have qualified for the Silver Award of the National Junior Angus Association, James Fisher, director of activities and junior activities for the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Mo., recently announced.
The brothers and their sister are the 13-year-old children of Gregory and Julie Rieker, and attend Saint Peter’s Lutheran School. They have shown their Angus cattle at various shows at the local, state and national levels. Katarina, Baron, Steven and Zachary have all participated in the photography and poster contest and the Certified Angus Beef® Cook-off at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). They also have cattle enrolled in the American Angus Association’s Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) Program. The siblings are members of the Indiana Junior Angus Association and have been members of the National Junior Angus Association since 2000.
The Silver Award is the second of the three levels of the National Junior Angus Association Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards and then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in the areas of junior Angus association activities, participation in showmanship and leadership competitions, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.
Preble Shawnee FFA collects food for Preble County families
CAMDEN, Ohio — The Preble Shawnee FFA collected cans throughout the school for needy families from Nov. 14-18.
The chapter collected nonperishable food items to give to families in Preble County. The activity was successful and 1,000 cans were collected.
