By DOUG GRAVES Ohio Correspondent COLUMBUS, Ohio — Name the four compartments of a cow’s stomach. What name is given to a non-castrated adult male cow? What is the name given to a heifer that is close to calving? These questions and many more will be posed to Ohio youth ages 8-21 when they compete on Jan. 12 in the Ohio Cattlemen’s Assoc. (OCA) Youth Quiz Bowl. According to OCA Executive Director Elizabeth Harsh, the event will allow youth to showcase their beef industry knowledge and prepare them for many other such livestock judging contests. “It was a great inaugural event and one that will grow,” she said. “This is ideal for junior beef organizations, 4-H and others who are practicing for competitions later in the year.” This one-day event is a two-part contest, consisting of a written round and verbal round. There will be three age divisions competing, and the top three individuals in each age category in the written contest will be recognized, as well as the top team in each group of the Quiz Bowl. Participants may sign up as an individual or as a four-member team. Breed association members, 4-H members, FFA chapters and county team participation is encouraged but not mandatory. The one-day affair begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. The Cattlemen’s Quiz Bowl written individual test starts at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a Youth Beef Quality Assurance sessions at 10. Following a lunch (free to all contestants), the Quiz Bowl team competition will begin at 1 p.m. At 3:30 an age-appropriate Youth Opportunities Sessions will be held, with Youth Quiz Bowl awards and photos to follow. “Our first season we had 40 individuals and teams, but we expect our numbers to grow,” Harsh said. “The focus of the OCA is on youth development, and anything we can do to include families with young people will lead to good skills and animal husbandry. The parents can participate in the policy development contest and hear the latest from the industry speakers.” The preliminary round will consist of a 50-question written test for individuals and teams. In addition, five bonus questions will be given in order to break ties. The first match will consist of one 10-question round; any member may answer. The second match will consist of two rounds – one 12-question round where anyone can answer, then a second eight-question matchup round, where only the first member of each team can answer the first questions, the second question answered by the second person in each team and so forth. The third and final match will consist of two rounds. The first will be a 12-question round with anyone answering, and a 12-question round for one-on-one competition. In the latter round contestants will ring in, at which time a moderator will test that individual. Contestants will have 10 seconds to answer each question in these two rounds. According to Harsh, questions in the contest will include such things as trivia, animal husbandry, genetics, nutrition, meat and more. This event will be held at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center, 100 Green Meadows Drive South in Lewis Center, Ohio. The contest is open to Ohio youth aged 8-21 as of Jan. 1, 2019. The cost is $20 for individuals and $60 per team. The registration deadline is Dec. 28; for more information and registration, go to www.ohiocattle.org |
