Indiana FFA engines team wins district HAGERSTOWN, Ind. — The Hagerstown FFA Small Engines Team of the Hagerstown, Ind. FFA Chapter recently placed first and third out of ten teams during the District contest on March 15.
The District competition took place at Union County High School in Liberty, Ind. The first place team members are Cody Fink and Cody Rushton. The third place team members are Charlie Gerkin and Lucas Mitchell. During the competition students were asked to take two written exams, a parts and tools test, perform five small engine skills and assemble an engine and have it running in 75 minutes. The Hagerstown Small Engines Team coach is agricultural mechanics teacher Roger Lumpkin.
The Hagerstown FFA Chapter also recently hosted their annual Livestock Judging Invitational on March 3 in Richmond, Ind. at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Chapter members said that there were 108 participants from 18 different schools in Indiana.
Bruner receives FFA scholarship PETTISVILLE, Ind. — Laura Bruner recently received the 2007 Pettisville FFA Alumni College Scholarship award.
This scholarship is given to a Pettisville FFA member to assist them in continuing studies of agriculture.
Bruner is currently a sophomore at The Ohio State University majoring in plant health management. She is a member of Alpha Zeta Partners Honorary, president of PHARM and works at the OSU Soybean Lab at the Waterman Farm.
Through Bruner’s agri-science classes, science classes and her agri-science research projects she developed a passion for plants and genetics. An active FFA member in her last year, she participated in the National Food Science and Technology Proficiency awards program and will participate in the National FFA Costa Rica travel seminar this summer.
Allen County 4Hers plan flower sale FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Allen County 4-H Clubs of Ft. Wayne, Ind. will raise money this year by hosting a plant sale including Boston ferns, petunias, New Guinea impatiens and geraniums.
Each four-inch potted geranium cost $1. Geranium colors include: red, salmon, white, pink and fuschia. Geraniums in salmon, red and fuschia will also be sold in baskets. Boston ferns and purple wave petunias and pink wave petunias as well as New Guinea impatiens baskets are also for sale. All baskets are ten inches in size and cost $12 each. To order flowers, contact the Purdue University Extension Office in Allen County at 260-481-6826 by the March 30 deadline.
Parkway hosted FFA week festivities ROCKFORD, Ohio — The Parkway FFA Chapter recently held their annual FFA Week on Feb. 26-March 1.
Some of the events that took place were ag dress-up, ag olympics and guess jars. In the guessing contest, students were asked to estimate the amount of M&M’s, Skittles, soybeans, and Jolly Ranchers in a jar. Also, on Feb. 23, the Parkway FFA Chapter invited hypnotist Mark Rayburn to provide an entertaining show.
“The show was really exciting and made my stomach hurt from laughing so hard,” said Dee Dee Knapke.
Parkway started the FFA week festivities with a hat day and a milk chugging contest. The second day featured the Cowboy/Cowgirl contest and a Milk the Cow event. Also, Parkway hosted a petting zoo, where FFA members brought animals in for the elementary students to see.
The third day featured a duct tape outfit contest, where students were able to express their creativity in design. Also on Wednesday, the Ag Olympics event kicked off with the Ring the Bottle contest. The goal was to see how many points one could score by ringing the bottle.
