By JANE HOUIN Ohio Correspondent COLUMBUS, Ohio — Horse owners and enthusiasts can mark their calendars for April 12-15 to attend the 14th annual Equine Affair in the Midwest to take place at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.
An annual highlight of the event is the training clinics offered by re-nowned equestrians and trainers. Leading coaches, competitors and trainers from across the country will present a full schedule of in-depth clinics on a wide array of equestrian sports and training techniques.
Clinics will take place throughout the event in the Coliseum, the Voinovich Livestock and Trade Center, Cooper Arena and Rod’s Covered Paddock.
In addition, attendees will enjoy four full days of seminars and hands-on demonstrations at the Wahl Clipper Seminar State, the Demo Ring in the Bricker Annex and the Arabian Horse Assoc. Demo Ring in the Celeste Center.
Industry experts will present non-stop sessions on a wide variety of topics relevant to horse enthusiasts from amateurs to seasoned professionals, including horse management, health and training topics. Throughout the weekend, more than 220 different clinics, seminars and demonstrations will be featured.
For those who enjoy shopping for their horses and themselves, the Equine Affaire hosts the largest trade show of any horse exposition in the United States, featuring more than 450 of the nation’s leading equine-related retailers and manufacturers.
Attendees can browse through acres of equine products and services ranging from tack, riding apparel and grooming supplies to farm equipment, gifts and books.
The Cashman Breed Pavilion will feature exhibit booths and stalls where attendees will be able to see, touch and learn more about a wide variety of breeds.
Individual breeds are represented by their associations as well as a rotating cast of selected stallions, mares and geldings. The Horse and Farm exhibits area features a number of stallions, horse-breeding farms and training facilities.
And not to leave out the little ones, horsey kids of all ages convene at the Young Rider Youth Pavilion. In addition to educational and horse-related youth association exhibits, presentations will take place through each day by many of the horse industry’s most popular educators, demonstrations of various horse breeds as well as plenty of fun activities for kids. In addition, Bonnie Bryant, author of The Saddle Club book series, will also be on hand in the youth pavilion on Thursday.
The Breyer Celebrity Horse Showcase in the youth pavilion will provide the opportunity for youth and adults alike to meet the real horses behind some of their favorite Breyer collectibles. For example, Lady “C”, a Tennessee Walking Horse owned by singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow will be one of the horses featured along with Blanco, a 15-year old grey Andalusian gelding best known for his role as wizard Gandalf the White’s legendary horse Shadowfax in the Lord of the Ring’s movies The Two Towers and Return of the King.
New in 2007, the event will feature Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race as seen on RFD-TV. This competition will challenge horses and riders to work through an obstacle course while being timed and judged on their abilities with top competitors receiving large cash prizes as well as Circle Y saddles.
An attraction on it’s own, the Pfizer Fantasia: A Musical Celebration of the Horse will again return on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in the Coliseum.
The show will feature a variety of outstanding equestrian acts from across the country choreographed to musical styles ranging from country to classical to contemporary.
Attendees will see many of the same popular elements from past shows as well as many new acts, with performers partnering with a wide variety of breeds ranging from miniatures and Paso Finos or Friesians and draft horses.
Tickets are sold out each year for this performance with tickets ranging from $12 to $24 each, plus shipping and handling. Any tickets not sold in advance will go on sale at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Celeste Center lobby at the Equine Affaire.
Show hours will be 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets include admission to all clinics and seminars.
Adult tickets are $13 per day or $40 for a four-day pass; tickets for youth ages 7-12 are $8 per day or $24 for a four-day pass.
Children under 6 are admitted free. Admission tickets can also be purchased online or through the same phone number as tickets for the Pfizer Fantasia.
