48th annual Corn Dry Milling meeting at USDA’s Illinois lab

PEORIA, Ill. — The 48th annual Corn Dry Milling Conference is set for May 31-June 1 at the USDA’s National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR), 1815 N. University in Peoria.

The event is sponsored by the North American Millers’ Assoc. (NAMA) and NCAUR.

“On the program this year are mycotoxins, ethanol and the results of the corn research underway at Purdue University, in addition to other scientific and technical topics,” said Terri Long, NAMA director of communications and meetings.

Planning for this year’s event was done by Keith Smith of Cargill Corn Milling, along with Will Duensing of Bunge Milling, Inc.; Robert Harper, Hopkinsville Milling Company; Jeff Maple, Wilson’s Corn Products, Inc.; Bruce Roskens, PepsiCo/Quaker Oats and Don Sullins of ADM Milling Co.

NCAUR’s David Kendra will welcome attendees and make opening remarks at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 31.

At 1:15, Charles Woloshuk of Purdue University will present Corn Ear Rot and the Impact of Cropping Systems, followed by Don Wicklow, who will discuss sorting grain contaminated with mycotoxigenic fungi.

At 2:15, Peter Cotty of the USDA and University of Arizona will lecture on Biocontrol of Mycotoxigenic Fungi in Corn. At 3 p.m., Kendra will present Resistance Breeding to Mycotoxigenic Fungi in Corn, followed by Dojin Ryu of Texas Women’s University with a presentation on the impact of extrusion on fumonisins.

At 4 p.m., Mario Ferruzi of Purdue will present Beneficial Compounds in Corn. The final speaker of the day will be Felicia Wu from the University of Pittsburgh, who will speak on The Economic Impact of Bt Corn on Mycotoxin Reduction.

A reception and dinner will be at Peoria’s Radisson Hotel at 6:30 p.m. May 31.

Speakers scheduled for Friday, June 1 include Rick Tolman of the National Corn Growers Assoc., NCGA and Biofuels, who will speak at 8:30 a.m., Gary Munkvold of Iowa State University, Importance of Corn Grain Quality, Chuck Hill of AgriGold Corn on Corn: Expanding Uses – How Will Seed Companies Handle Change, Bruce Dien Cellulose Conversion Technology in a Dry Mill Pathway and Robert Wisner of Iowa State Economic Impacts of Fuel Ethanol for Agriculture.

The conference will wrap up by noon.

Registration costs $75 for non-NAMA members for the conference and dinner or $25 for the conference alone. Checks are made payable to NAMA; no credit cards are accepted.
