Ohio FFA Alumni sponsor Greenhand Quiz event

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio FFA Association named the winners of the 2007 Career Development Events (CDE’s) during the 79th annual state FFA Convention in May.

Jr Laborie, from the Elmwood FFA Chapter in Wood County, received first place individual, while the first place team went to the Elmwood FFA Chapter. The Ohio FFA Alumni sponsored the Greenhand Quiz Contest through a partnership with the Ohio FFA

The Greenhand Quiz Career Development Event is designed to test the knowledge of first-year members. Members are required to know a variety of information about the FFA organization such as the year the FFA began, the colors and parts of the FFA emblem.
CDE’s are an extension of the local agricultural education classroom and serve as an application of the curriculum in which students are instructed.

The FFA is a national organization of over 494,000 members dedicated to preparing members for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.

The Ohio FFA Association has 23,318 members which is the 5th largest membership in the nation. FFA Alumni affiliates were formed to operate in support of the 7,300 FFA chapters across the nation. Their purpose is to help today’s agricultural youth by joining together in a united volunteer effort to assist FFA, promote a greater knowledge of the agricultural industry, and support education in local agricultural education programs. Ohio has over 90 alumni affiliates.

Indiana 4-H goat project receives $6,000 donation

GREENFIELD, Ind. — With the 2007 Hancock County Fair just four weeks away, Central Indiana Power has given the 4-H goat pen project a huge boost with a $6,000 donation.

The monies came from the Central Indiana Power Community Trust, Inc., which uses monthly donations from electric customers  to help fund community-worthy projects. The Hancock County 4-H Ag Association is using the much-needed finds to add finishing touches to a new building on the fairgrounds that will house goats, llamas and rabbits.

The number of 4Hers enrolled in the goat project has increased significantly in the past three years, thus creating the need for the new barn and pens. 4-H Goat Club leaders and members are in the midst of a $32,000 fundraising project to purchase the new pens.
