By NANCY VORIS Indiana Correspondent MORGANTOWN, Ind. — Presnell Plantation, a 500-acre showcase of best management practices for conservation and agriculture, will host a field day beginning at 10 a.m. June 29.
The event is sponsored by the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Youngs Creek and Indian Creek Watershed projects. The plantation is owned by Kevin and Sheila Presnell, who are certified as technical service providers for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
In addition to the plantation’s natural resources, manmade features include: erosion control systems, six fishing lakes, two wetland lakes, waterways, filter strips, buffer strips, riparian buffers, shelter belts, wildlife windbreak corridors, wildlife corridors, classified forest, classified wildlife, wildlife easements, habitat plantings, food plots, prairie grass and wildflower plantings, row crops, feed storage, dry feed lots and rotational grazing and watering systems.
The field day will be split into two touring groups. The agriculture/NRCS tour will include heavy use area, alternative watering systems, grass waterways, parallel terraces and pasture seeding.
The wildlife habitat/Grasslands Reserve Program tour will include riparian area plantings, food plots, prairie grass plantings, wetland lakes and filter strips.
Groups will tour by wagons provided by Presnell Plantation. Following lunch, the two groups will switch so that participants can see most of the projects. Kevin Presnell, John Hyatt and Kathy Goss of Presnell Plantation will lead the tours.
