Ft. Recovery FFA chapter attends summer camp

FT. RECOVERY, Ohio — Eleven members of the Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter recently attended FFA Camp in Carrolton, Ohio the week of July 9-13.

FFA Camp is held each summer for Ohio FFA members and encourages students to develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. The current state officer team, summer program staff, and camp staff joined together to provide an opportunity to meet members from chapters across the state.

During the week, campers participated in basketball, soccer, water polo, table tennis, shotgun and rifle range, and other tournaments; attended state officer led leadership sessions, workshops and campfires; and enjoyed swimming, canoeing and motor boating on Leesville Lake.

Staff members led campers through Adventure Valley, a ground initiative course designed to promote teamwork, communication and trust. Advanced campers participated in overnighter activities and the high ropes course. Campers raised money during the week to put a “Pie-In-The-Eye” of their favorite advisor, state officer, or staff member with all proceeds going to Children’s Hospital.

Ft. Recovery FFA members attending camp included Kelsey Brockman, Tiffany Fields, Lindsey Fortkamp, Chris Gehret, Tyler Huelskamp, Ashley Kaiser, Jeremy Siegrist, Kelly Thien, Ben Tobe, Shelby Westgerdes, and Tom Will. Chapter Advisors Michael Grower and Joe Hawk served as chaperones.

Farm Credit announces scholarship winners

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, an ag lending cooperative, recently announced the eighteen scholarship recipients, who will each be awarded $2,000.

The scholarship awards were created through a new program established to address the cooperative’s desire to return greater value to rural America by increasing the association’s investment in education and youth activities.

The 2007 scholarship winners include: Christina Egner, of Shelby, Ohio, who will attend the Ohio State University (OSU); Kelsey Lea Antrim, of Frankton, Ind., who will attend Purdue University; Hollie Suzanne Holman, of Union City, Tenn., who will attend University of Tennessee at Martin; Lisa Buehler, of Anna, Ohio, who will attend OSU; Landon Bryan Roberts, of Campbellsburg, Ind., who will attend Purdue; Leann Stinson, Auburn, Ky., who will attend Western Kentucky University; Benjamin Ray Overmyer, of Rochester, Ind., Purdue; James F. Gilles III, of Owensboro, Ky., University of Kentucky; David Layman, of Philadelphia, Tenn., Tennessee Technological University; Clark Jordan, of Richmond, Ind., Purdue University; Carrie Darnell, of Morning View, Ky.. Western Kentucky University; Bethany Koester, of Wadesville, Ind., Ball State University; Kellie Schmucker, of Louisville, Ohio, Mount Union College; Bradley McQueen, of Shady Valley, Tenn. University of Tennessee; Jacob Smoker, Wanatah, Ind., Purdue University; Andrea Gibson, Midland, Ohio, Wilmington College; Colby Madison Hamm, of Hohenwald, Tenn., University of Tennessee at Martin; Wesley Bynum, of Hillsboro, Tenn., Middle Tennessee State University.

“This year’s scholarship recipients were selected from an outstanding pool of applicants,” said Bob Barton, chair of the 18 member board of directors. ”We understand the importance of investing in the future and are proud to support students as they pursue careers in agriculture, finance or agricultural business studies. As agriculture continues to grow and evolve, we want students to be at the forefront of the industry and grow with it.”
The scholarships were available to FCS members or their dependents and were awarded based on academic record, leadership qualities and community involvement.

Monroe Central FFA member wins state

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Albany- Lynsee Shaffer of the Monroe Central FFA chapter was named state winner of the swine entrepreneurship proficiency on June 19.

The award presentation was made during the 78th Indiana FFA State Convention at Purdue University. Shaffer, along with her sister have a swine operation, which includes 35 sows and a show pig business, where they sell show pigs to 4-H and FFA members all across the United States. Shaffer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Shaffer.

Shaffer will be a freshman this fall at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., studying agriculture, and will be a member of the college’s livestock judging team. She plans to transfer after two years to Purdue, where she hopes to study animal agribusiness and agricultural education. She hopes to return to the family farm and carry on the family business. Her FFA advisor is Jim Weiler.

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees, or volunteers. SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) programs require that students keep detailed records, set goals, and helps them learn practical, useful skills.

Volunteers needed for National FFA Convention

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The 80th annual National FFA Convention, the nation’s largest annual youth convention, will bring nearly 55,000 student members, adult advisors and industry sponsors from across the country to Indianapolis from Oct. 24-27.

Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help welcome these visitors to Indianapolis and interact with students from all over the nation. Volunteers can register at www.ffaindy.com

As Indianapolis’ largest annual convention, events will occur in Conseco Fieldhouse, the Indiana Convention Center and RCA Dome, the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Fort Benjamin Harrison, as well as most major downtown hotels.

Volunteers are needed to welcome and warmly greet visitors as well as give key city and venue information at the Indianapolis airport, information desks in event locations, and seven major downtown hotels.

Some volunteers may also help host education tours and career success tours that are planned.

All volunteers are requested to register for a minimum of two four-hour shifts from Monday, Oct. 22 at 8 a.m. through Saturday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. Volunteers are required to be at least 18 years of age and will be provided free parking, a volunteer uniform shirt and training.

Allen County 4-Hers honored at fair

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — 35 Allen County 4-Hers recently completed 10 years of participation in the Indiana 4-H program.

The 4-Hers were honored for their accomplishments during a ceremony at the Allen County Fair in Fort Wayne.

4-H members include: Sarah Ashe, Sarah Badenhop, William Barrett, Miranda Beaupre, Nathan Berndt, Catherine Deventer, Caitlin Eicher, Monica Eichman, Lee Emenhiser, Stephanie Emenhiser, Jill Gaylord, Andrew Gillespie, Matthew Grelsey, Neil Hesterman, Ruth Keller, Drew King, Elizabeth Lyvers, Jared Malcolm, Rosemarie McClamrock, Joseph Paden, Andrew Payonk, Jared Pontius, Katie Potter, Amanda Quintrell, Janet Redding, Jessica Reidenbech, Jill Riley, Eric Ryan, Katie Ryan, Katie Shank, Cassie Smith, Brogan Stillman, Krista Switzer, Amber Tolbert and Leslie Westerhouse.

26 young people participated in their final year of 4-H.
