Alltech launches `08 Young Animal Scientist Award LEXINGTON, Ky. — Alltech, a leader in animal nutrition, has announced the official launch of its 2008 Young Animal Scientist (YAS) award program.
The program is listed online at www.alltech.com/yas “We’re so proud to be able to do this each year and are thrilled that now, in the third year of the program, it’s more popular than ever. It really speaks to the love of learning that is present in so many young people throughout the world,” said Pearse Lyons, president of Alltech.
The winner will be announced at Alltech’s global headquarters in Kentucky during Alltech’s 24th International Feed Industry Symposium in April 2008, and will receive a prize of $5,000, along with a trophy.
Ohio junior exhibitor earns Limousin’s O’Brien Award CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Megan Greenawalt, 17, of Lynchburg, Ohio, received the Dick O’Brien Memorial Junior Herdsman Award at the National Junior Limousin Show and Congress (NJLSC) in West Monroe, La. The North American Limousin Junior Association (NALJA) presented the award at its annual awards banquet on July 27.
State Limousin junior advisors nominate NJLSC exhibitors for the O’Brien Award to recognize a superior job of caring for animals, interacting with others, meeting the public and demonstrating maturity. First presented in 1996, the award honors the memory of Limousin enthusiast Dick O’Brien. With more than 30 years in the breed, the O’Brien family from Missouri has one of the nation’s pioneer Limousin herds.
Critter Haven Llama Lovers named Outstanding 4-H Club FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Critter Haven Farm Llama Lovers 4-H Club was recognized recently as the Outstanding 4-H Club for 2007 during the 4-H Awards Ceremony at the Allen County Fair.
The club was selected from over 32 different 4-H Clubs in Allen County to receive this honor.
This 28-member club is a Llama Club that meets in the northern part of Allen County.
They participated in numerous community service projects throughout the year, which included taking the llamas to Retirement Centers, Nursing Homes and Daycare Centers. They also participated in several parades throughout the year, including the Allen County Fair Parade, and parades in Huntertown, Grabill, Hoagland and Churubusco. They also promoted 4-H and Llamas at festivals and special events.
The club received a certificate and a cash gift from Allen County 4-H Clubs Inc. They also received a traveling banner and plaque. Volunteer 4-H Leaders with the club include: Doris Schlemmer, Katie Adelman, Laura Howard, Lynette Swinehart and Katie Moore. In addition, fifteen other 4-H Clubs were recognized for their work over the past year. Gold recognition went to Aboite Homesteaders and Blue Ribbons; Silver recognition went to Golden Hearts, Marion BG’s, Llama Lovers-New Millennium Farm, Llama Lovers-Simmons Farm and Three Rivers 4-H; Bronze recognition went to Caprine Capers, Cedar Creek Companions, Crafty Cubs, Ecstatic Eagles, Eel River, Maumee Go Getters, Sporthorse and Three Rivers Rabbit Raisers.

Limi Boosters names Indiana scholar WEST MONROE, La. — Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Ind. received $500 scholarships from the Limi Boosters during the National Junior Limousin Show and Congress (NJLSC) awards banquet July 27 in West Monroe, La.
Griffiths, 18, joined both the Indiana Junior Limousin Association and National Junior Limousin Association (NAJLA) in 1996. This fall, she will attend BlackHawk East Community College in Kewanee, Ill. She plans to transfer to Kansas State University to obtain her bachelor’s degree in animal science then pursue a graduate degree in meat science at South Dakota State University or Texas A&M University. Her goal is to work for a branded beef program.
The Limi Boosters is the auxiliary organization to the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF). It supports and promotes NAJLA and helps promote the Limousin breed. In addition to educational scholarships and grants, the group awards funds to state junior Limousin associations for their field days.
