Indiana student awarded FFA Career Pathway Grant<br>
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The National FFA Organization (FFA) announced Clayton L. Goodnight of Frankfort, Ind. was selected to receive a grant in the amount of $500 to initiate or improve Goodnight’s career development experience known as a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE).<br>
Goodnight’s SAE project consisted of an acre field of Indian corn, which was damaged by rodents in 2007, causing a tremendous crop loss to his field. <br>
From a pool of several hundred candidates nationwide, Goodnight was dubbed the winner, filling the basic requirements and much more as an active FFA member of the Clinton Prairie FFA Chapter.
This award is sponsored by CHS Foundation, a special project of the National FFA Foundation. While this program rewards FFA members with the initiative to make their mark through their SAE, Levi programs reward excellence, initiative and special contributions to other fields of agriculture.<br>
Students receive scholarships at Ohio Cattlemen’s banquet<br>
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nine youth involved with the beef industry, furthering their education and pursuing degrees in an agriculture-related field, were honored as scholarship recipients at the 2008 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association annual awards banquet Jan. 19, at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café in Columbus, Ohio.<br>
The first scholarship of the evening awarded was the Steve R. Rauch Benchmark of Excellence Scholarship, which is a $5,000 scholarship awarded over a three year period to a student enrolled in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University. This scholarship was first awarded in 2000 due to the generous contribution of Steve Rauch, a cattleman and businessman from Montgomery County. Students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average throughout the duration of the scholarship.<br>
Christina Egner was awarded her first installment of her scholarship. Egner is the daughter of Kelvin and Jackie Egner of Shelby. She is a sophomore at The Ohio State University where she majors in animal sciences. <br>
Last year’s recipient Nicholas Leeper of Marysville received the second installment of his scholarship and spoke about his educational experiences over the past year. Leeper is the son of Wes and Lori Leeper of Marysville. He is a freshman at The Ohio State University where he majors in agricultural engineering. Lisa Buehler received her third installment of the Rauch Scholarship. Buehler is the daughter of Gary and Molly Buehler of Anna. She is a senior at The Ohio State University where she is majoring in agribusiness and applied economics. She is active outside of the classroom taking part in various honorary societies and student organizations. <br>
At this year’s awards banquet three $1,000 Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation Tagged for Greatness Scholarships were presented. The scholarships are sponsored by The Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation Tagged for Greatness license plate program. The more beef license plates sold, the more the Foundation can do in rewarding outstanding young people and allowing them to pursue and achieve academic success. <br>
Award recipients were Justin Spengler, Monroe County; Allison Agle, Clark County; and Natalie Miller, Richland County.<br>
Spengler is the son of Howard and Patti Spengler of Woodsfield. Born on an Angus farm, Spengler is currently a junior at The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, majoring in animal science. After completing his education Spengler plans to return to the family farm where he will continue raising cattle and working in the agricultural industry.<br>
Miller is the daughter of Ed and Kate Miller of Shelby. Currently a junior at The Ohio State University, Miller is majoring in animal sciences. She hopes to remain affiliated with the industry by working in beef nutrition or reproduction after completing her education.<br>
Agle is the daughter of Robert and Peggy Agle of South Vienna.
As a sophomore at Ohio State, Agle is majoring in food business management, with a minor in animal sciences. <br>
New to this year’s award banquet, two $1,000 Cattlemen’s Country Club scholarship awards were presented. The scholarships are sponsored by the proceeds from the beef putt-putt golf course at the 2007 Ohio State Fair. Award recipients were Daniel Ulry, Licking County and Krystin Bachman, Fairfield County.<br>
Ulry is the son of Jeff and Melinda Ulry of Johnstown. Familiar with cattle from a family that raised and exhibited livestock, Currently a high school senior, Ulry will attend The Ohio State University this fall majoring in animal sciences. <br>
Bachman is the daughter of Doug and Cheryl Majors of Lancaster. Bachman has been active in the cattle industry as an Ohio Angus Association member and treasurer, National Junior Angus Association contest participant, Fairfield County Junior Fairboard member and numerous groups and teams for her FFA chapter. Bachman will begin her first year at The Ohio State University this fall, majoring in agricultural engineering. <br>
The final scholarship presentation of the night was the Ohio CattleWomen’s Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students entering their junior or senior year of college in the state of Ohio, preferably to a major in agriculture, specifically relating to beef. Applicants must maintain a 2.75 GPA or higher. The two ladies to receive this award included Christina Egner, Richland County and Lindsey Kay Regula, Auglaize County.<br>
Egner is the daughter of Kelvin and Jackie Egner from Shelby, Ohio. She is a member of the Richland County Cattleman, Ohio Cattlemen, Ohio Angus Association, Ohio Junior Angus Association and the American Angus Association. Egner currently attends The Ohio State University majoring in Animal Sciences with a minor in Agri-Business.<br>
Regula is the daughter of Rick and Deb Regula from Wapakoneta, Ohio. She and her family are members of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association. She and her family are members of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association.
