Hill named a Tenn. assistant commissioner of agriculture<br>
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — State Agriculture Commissioner Ken Givens announced the appointment of Union City, Tenn., native Adam L. Hill as assistant commissioner for policy and legislation for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA).<br>
As assistant commissioner, Hill will serve as the department’s principal liaison to the Tennessee General Assembly and will direct policy and program development in areas ranging from food safety, pesticides and business regulation, to forestry and agricultural market development, as well as supervise the Agricultural Crime Unit.<br>
He has been with the TDA since 2004, and served as legislative liaison and budget coordinator. In his former positions, he was responsible for strategic planning and guided the department’s successful transition to performance-based budgeting.<br>
Prior to joining the department, Hill was a field director for the Tennessee Democratic Party during the 2000 general election and has been employed in various agricultural roles over the past 15 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in Organizational <br>Communication from Murray State University’s School of Business and Public Affairs in Murray, Ky. He also studied abroad at King’s College in London.
Hill’s appointment follows last year’s retirement of Patricia N. Clark, who was the first woman to serve as an assistant commissioner of agriculture in Tennessee. Clark continues to serve the department part-time as a legislative liaison.<br>

UT appoints new dean of research, station director<br>

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture has named Dr. William F. Brown dean for research and director of the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station.<br>
As dean, Brown will coordinate the research programs of some 130 agricultural and natural resource faculty in seven academic departments. In addition, he will oversee the management of 10 research facilities operated in strategic locations across the state.
Brown’s appointment is effective July 1. He has served as assistant dean and assistant director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, along with program director of the Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture Research Program and co-director of the Center for Tropical Agriculture at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Since 2002, the offshore exclusion or mitigation of invasive alien species threats to Florida has been a major focus of the Center’s activities.<br>
Brown is no stranger to UT. Between earning his bachelor of science at the University of Florida in 1977 and his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska in 1983, Brown earned a master’s degree in animal science from what was then known as the UT College of Agriculture. A professor of animal science, Brown has published widely in both scientific and trade literature and has served in editorial and review capacities for a number of scholarly publications, including the Journal of Animal Science and the Journal of Production Agriculture.<br>
