Ft. Recovery FFA hosts ag breakfast<br> FT. RECOVERY, Ohio — The Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter hosted its annual community ag breakfast during National FFA Week in the Ft. Recovery High School Commons Area. FFA members served approximately 300 breakfasts for local ag business leaders, community leaders, teachers, parents, and FFA members to show appreciation for all their support. Members prepared scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and pancakes for all to enjoy. This event allows the FFA to treat and thank those who support the Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter year after year. A special thanks to Fort Recovery Equity for donating the eggs, Lennartz Farms for donating the hog, and to Helen Aisenbrey, high school head cook, for her continued help and support.<br> Indiana to honor top math, science students<br> INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Governor Daniels recently announced a new state award to recognize Indiana’s top high school talent in math and science. The Hoosier High School Math and Science Awards will be given each year to the state’s best high school math student and best science student.<br> “Every spring, we celebrate with excitement the selection of Mr. and Miss Basketball,” said Daniels. “It’s past time that we hold academic achievement in the same esteem and emphasize the decisive importance that ability in math and science will play in Indiana’s future.”<br> All Indiana high school students are eligible to receive the award and can apply online. Nominations from teachers, principals and other school staff members will also be accepted. Application criteria will include such information as SAT, ACT and Advanced Placement scores, awards and prizes as well as grades received in math and science courses. <br> Winners, who will be acknowledged as Mr. or Miss Math or Science, respectively, will be selected by a committee of high school math and science teachers, curriculum experts from the Indiana Department of Education, and the Governor’s Office.<br> The award was developed with input from the Indiana Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (I-STEM) Network, the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc. (HASTI), the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) and the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents.<br> Applications are available online at https://secure.in.gov/apps/mathscienceawards/<br> The deadline to apply is April 4. Winners will be announced before the end of the school year.<br> Six ag students win scholarships<br> NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The BASF Corp., the American Soybean Assoc. (ASA) and the National Corn Growers Assoc. (NCGA) announced the winners of scholarships at the Commodity Classic in Nashville on Feb. 29. The scholarships support future leaders of the agricultural industry who are pursuing agricultural studies at colleges across the country.<br> The 2008-09 Kip Cullers Secure Optimal Yield (SOY) Scholarship was awarded to Laura Stevens, a high school senior in Falls City, Neb., who is planning to double-major in agronomy and ag journalism.<br> This year’s SOY Scholarship is named in honor of world soybean yield champion Cullers of Purdy, Mo., who set a new world record for production in 2007 with a yield of 154.74 bushels/acre, topping his own previous record of 139.39 in 2006. The scholarship is managed by ASA and sponsored by BASF. <br> The NCGA Academic Excellence in Agriculture scholarships, also sponsored by BASF, are five $1,000-each scholarships awarded annually to deserving undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees in ag-related fields. Ken McCauley, chairman of NCGA, announced the winners of this year’s scholarships: Jason Buss of the University of Illinois, Lauren Schlosser of the University of Missouri-Columbia, James Seitzer of the University of Minnesota, Catie Simpson of Colorado State University and Josh Yoder of The Ohio State University.<br> <i>This farm news was published in the March 12, 2008 issue of the Farm World, serving Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee.</i></p><p> |
