Clinton Central wins state livestock judging contest
MICHIGANTOWN, Ind. — The Clinton Central FFA chapter was recently dubbed the champion team in the Indiana FFA Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event held at Purdue University on May 17.
Members of the first place team were Alyssa Smith, Brant Smith, Courtney Smith and Brent Dunham. The coach and agriculture education instructor is Roger K. Carr. This team will represent Indiana at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. this upcoming fall.
The East Noble FFA team was named Reserve State Champion team. Team members were Kyle Dice, Nick Riecke, Cory Riecke and Cody Riecke. The coach of the team was Jackie Bell. This team will represent Indiana at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The third place team was Clinton Central and members were Kinzie Selke, Jade Crum, Dillion Evans and Ashley Davis and coach of the team was Roger K. Carr. This team will represent Indiana at the American Royal in Kansas City.
The FFA Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event provides an opportunity for FFA members to display their agriculture knowledge and skills in the area of livestock evaluation.
Contestants place 12 classes of breeding and market cattle, hogs, sheep and goats and give six sets of oral reasons. There was 19 teams and 79 individuals that competed in this year’s event. The Livestock Career Development Event was coordinated and conducted by Clint Rusk and Matt Claeys and other faculty and staff with Indiana 4-H and Animal Sciences at Purdue University.
The Indiana FFA Association has 183 local chapters with over 9,000 FFA members. FFA is a national organization of more than 490,000 members preparing for leadership and careers in science, business and technology of agriculture.
Local, state and national programs provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. FFA’s mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agriculture education.
Ft. Recovery FFA Agricultural Engineering Earns Banner FT. RECOVERY, Ohio – The Ft. Recovery FFA Agricultural Engineering Team recently placed 2nd in the state out of 60 teams at the 80th State FFA Convention, which was held at the Ohio State Fairgrounds.
The Agricultural Engineering Team had to complete an extensive exam on the agricultural industry that included welding, mechanics, hydraulics, construction, electricity, mechanical power, concrete and environmental safety. The Agricultural Engineering Team members include Kevin Fullenkamp, Chris Gehret, Jordan Hess, Cody Kaiser, Greg Lennartz, Mark Post, Jeremy Siegrist, Ben Tobe, Tom Will and Brandon Wilker.
Jeremy Siegrist, son of Don and Sally, placed 2nd individually out of 223 individuals. The team will advance to the National Convention in October this fall and represent the state of Ohio due to the first place team opting out.
Fairfield FFA Chapter ranks 2nd in Ohio
LEESBURG, Ohio — The Ohio FFA Association recently selected the Fairfield FFA Chapter Ohio as the 2nd ranked chapter in the state. Fairfield FFA was also named as a Model of Innovation finalist for the Ohio FFA Association’s National Chapter Award program in all three divisions, student, chapter and community. 26 Fairfield FFA members attended the 80th Ohio FFA Convention in Columbus, Ohio, May 2-3, where they were recognized for this honor.
The National FFA Chapter Award program recognizes FFA chapters for developing and conducting a detailed Program of Activities (POA). These activities and projects provide opportunities for members to achieve in the areas of student, chapter and community development.
The Fairfield FFA Chapter was one of 10 finalists selected from a pool of more than 320 statewide FFA chapter applicants. After being named a state finalist, six students were sent from the Fairfield FFA chapter to participate in three interviews. Each 15 minute interview included a complete explanation of all activities of the chapter including chapter, community and student development. Ashley Adams, Leslie Barrett, Dianna Barrett, Emma Dean, Kyle Stevens and Courtney Zimmerman were interviewed. The following day, the chapter was announced to be the 2nd ranked FFA chapter in the state of Ohio.
Top Models of Innovation chapters showcase those unique and innovative ideas and activities the chapter sponsors throughout the year. As a state finalist, the chapter members and their POA will be featured on the Ohio FFA website, highlighting the best FFA chapters.
Ohio announces CDE award winners
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio FFA Convention recently awarded Career Development Event winners in a series of program areas in early May.
Career Development Events (CDE’s) are an extension of the local agricultural education classroom and serve as an authentic application of the curriculum in which students are instructed. Through agricultural education and the FFA, amazing opportunities exist for FFA members.
With over 300 careers in agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources, FFA members can look forward to success as chemists, business owners, politicians, community leaders, veterinarians, farmers and teachers.
In the following five CDE’s the students completed a written test about the related subject matter.
The following are the districts top schools and top individuals in these five events:
For the Ag Engineering CDE, 1st place team went to Elmwood FFA, 2nd Bowling Green, 3rd Anthony Wayne and 4th Ayersville. For individuals in the ag engineering CDE, Lewis Stearns of Elmond placed 1st, Marc Heinze of Elmwood placed 2nd, Andrew Lewallen of Elmwood placed 3rd and Adam Anderson of Elmwood placed 4th. For the Cooperative Learning CDE, 1st place team went to Elmwood FFA, 2nd Anthony Wayne, 3rd Wauseon and 4th Fayette.
In the individual competition, Wes Cotterman of Elwood placed 1st, Jacob Hamman of Elmwood placed 2nd, Kira Andre of Wauseon placed 3rd and Kim Schnipke of Elmwood placed 4th.
For the Farm Management CDE, 1st place team went to Wauseon FFA, 2nd Elmwood, 3rd Archbold and 4th Pettisville. In the individual competition, Tim Short of Wauseon placed 1st, Justin Faber of Wauseon placed 2nd, John Schoenhals of Archbold placed 3rd and Amanda Duncan of Wauseon placed 4th.
For the Grain Merchandising CDE, 1st place team went to Elmwood FFA, 2nd Archbold, 3rd Edon and 4th Pettisville. In the individual competition, John Schoenhals of Archbold placed 1st, Lucas Nofziger of Pettisville placed 2nd, Joey Brown of Edon placed 3rd and Cambell Parrish of Edon placed 4th. |
