OSU walking tour offers new techniques

By VICKI JOHNSON
Ohio Correspondent

FREMONT, Ohio — A Walking the Fields Tour is planned for 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 6 starting at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s (OARDC) North Central Agricultural Research Station.

Pickle harvesting, tomato grafting, new pepper varieties and fertigation – the application of fertilizers, soil amendments and other water-soluble products through an irrigation system – are among the topics. The program starts with presentations at OARDC and continues with a self-driving tour of area growers’ fields.

Admission is free and open to the public. No registration is needed.
“This tour is designed as an informal event where growers can view new varieties and agricultural practices being utilized by others,” said Mark Koenig of Ohio State University extension’s Ottawa and Sandusky counties’ offices.

Topics include tomato grafting by Matt Kleinhenz, horticulture and crop science, OARDC and OSU extension, at the station; new pepper varieties, Matt Hofelich, also at the station; pepper fertigation, Craig Gillmor, at Gillmor Farm; farm market produce fertigation, John Riehm, at Riehm Farm Market; and machine-harvest pickles and sorting shed, Jane Stacey, at Vel-da Farm.
The Fremont station is at 1165 CR 43, off SR 53. For more, contact Koenig at 419-898-3631 or koenig.55@cfaes.osu.edu
