MSU dairy judging team brings Southwest honors home to Midwest
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Placing third overall in the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, the Michigan State University (MSU) Collegiate Dairy Judging Team continued its record of individual and team success.
MSU team members are Baylee Drown of Cedar Springs, Jessica Geurink of Allendale, Matt Sneller of Sebewaing and Mary Tenbrink of Coopersville. The team is coached by Joe Domecq.
The team placed first in Guernseys, second in Brown Swiss and Holsteins, sixth in Jerseys and fourth in oral reasons. Geurink was second overall in the contest, placing first in Brown Swiss and Jerseys, fifth in Guernseys and second in oral reasons. Drown finished sixth in Brown Swiss, seventh in Guernseys and seventh overall. Sneller placed seventh in Holsteins.
MSU is home to three categories of dairy judging teams - collegiate, agricultural technology and 4-H - that feature adolescent to young adult students working together.

Preble Shawnee FFA sells fruit and hosts a bowling tournament
CAMDEN, Ohio — The Preble Shawnee FFA hosted its annual bowling tournament at the 40 Bowl in Richmond, Ind. on Jan. 16. Sixty-five FFA members from the local FFA chapters attended the event, with 29 of those being members of the Preble Shawnee FFA.
The first place team was Kami, Cory, Trevor, and Jeff from National Trail. The second and third place teams hailed from Eaton’s FFA chapter.
In other news, Preble Shawnee FFA’s annual fruit sale was deemed a success. They sold fruit for two weeks to friends, family and local businesses. In addition to a being a good fund-raiser for the chapter, the sale also included a contest to see which member could be the individual top seller. This year’s top sellers were Brad Ellington, first place; Josh Lucas, second place and Ashley Rumpke, third place.
Coverstone named Miami East FFA’s Member of the Month for February
CASSTOWN, Ohio — The February FFA Member of the Month for the Miami East FFA Chapter is Jake Coverstone. He is a junior at Miami East High School and is the son of Mark and Brenda Coverstone of Casstown.
Coverstone has competed in the General Livestock Judging contest. He has attended the State and National FFA Conventions. Recently he applied for a District Proficiency Award in the area of Small Animal Care and Production. Jake’s Supervised Agricultural Experi-ence consists of the care and breeding of two Golden Retrievers. He then sells the puppies. Jake also applied for his State FFA Degree.
