Later planting date aids South Indiana bean test

By SUSAN BLOWER

COLUMBUS, Ind. — In Bartholomew County in southern Indiana, tests revealed the top soybean hybrid to be Trisler 4275RR(CN) with 62.5 bushels per acre.

The trial was conducted by F.I.R.S.T., Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies, on a sandy loam, well drained, with a 0.5 percent slope. The test plot was on the farm of Alan Eilen, who previously planted corn treated by Prowl and Atrazine at that location.

LG C3988NRR and Becks 422NRR also finished well, with 59.4 and 58.8 bushels per acre, respectively.

Trisler’s gross income was listed as $687 compared to LG’s $653.80 and Becks’ $646.70.

On May 29, about 180,000 seeds were planted and on Oct.21 176,500 plants were recovered.

“The later planting date helped with emergence and final stand,” said Rich Schleuning, F.I.R.S.T. manager. Hurricanes and, conversely, dry weather also affected the outcome, he said.
“Tall plants (34-36 inches) made for some lodging with the help from Hurricane Ike. Head shatter loss was high due to dry beans,” Schleuning said.

Other top finishers at this location were: Trisler 4586RR(CN) at 58.2 bu./acre; Brown Enterprises 3909RS, 57.6 bu./acre; Great Lakes FL4019RR, 57.5 bu./acre; Becks 445NRR, 57.5 bu./acre; and Crows C4119R, 57.0 bu./acre.
