Bedding plants, produce open Hoosier Urban Garden Market

By ANN ALLEN
Indiana Correspondent

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Bedding plants and spring produce were featured when South Bend’s Urban Garden Market opened May 23 at 1025 North Bendix Drive, just south of Lincoln Way West and approximately 1.5 miles east of the Michiana Regional Airport.
“We tried it last September and it worked so well we’re back for this growing season,” said Donna Ring, the market manager.

“It’s a late growing season so we may not have many vendors at first, but we hope more vendors will join as the season progresses.”
The Urban Garden Market, a collaborative effort between growers and community organization, is partnering with the Botanical Society of Souyh Bend to provide the city’s west side community with a place to buy fresh produce direct from producers and to provide growers a direct market for their goods.

Noting the rise in home gardens, Ring said, “We welcome produce from home gardens. This is a good place to convert extra produce from backyard or community gardens into extra income.”

Current plans call for a gardening expert to be available to answer questions from new gardeners.
